Breaking Down the Options for New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello Before the NHL Trade Deadline

The New York Islanders are at a crossroads and GM Lou Lamoriello has some tough choices to make before the NHL Trade Deadline in 2 weeks.

Today we break down the three options he has and how each choice would effect the team in the short and long term.

Lou could do nothing and take his chances with the team he has now, he could add another player or two and try to nail down a playoff spot or he can start to trade away some veteran pieces and try to get younger, faster and stockpile picks and prospects for a retool.

We also discuss your questions about the leadership of the team both by the coach and the players and on team accountability.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Early starts and late nights this year at the office. Last night was working late and kept getting score updates on my phone. When I saw the final score I just saw red. Had to log off, turn out the lights early and walk to the car in the dark cold night. Was looking for an aluminum garbage can to kick on my way to the parking lot. Damn this is a frustrating season. 🤨

  2. HELLO Gil. Lou is on that slippery slope. Isles not far enough out to do a rebuild type of tdl. Yet isles are too close to a playoff spot to not try and improve somehow with probably a small depth type of move. D men are always available at tdl. Lou may opt for that route. Plus lou still has the varly/mayfield cards to play which may get some decent assets in picks or prospects. He may get a first for varly from a goalie starved team. After that not much else lou can do. Injured wahlstrom has no trade value. No other player outside of maybe parise has any trade worth. And word is kane's trade list is nyr and leafs only. Meier, chychrun too expensive. Karlsson too expensive $$$-asset wise. klingberg as a ufa ? vrana for cheap? Maybe lou just stays put with two ufa's unless he plans on re-signing both. Which is bad asset management if he does that. A gm's job is to try and improve his team. If a reasonable deal can be made to do that unless isles with tuff sked fall out of race by end of month. Last year lou stood pat (outside of re-signing 11,15) with isles too far out at tdl. But isles had no significant ufa's to deal or resign. So i say a depth move will be made while varly/mayfield or both get moved for assets. Sad reality is no trade is gonna suddenly transform isles into a contender outside of lou giving up everything for chychrun and meier. I don't think lou has lost him mind to do something crazy like that-yet. And pens have games in hand yet can't do much at tdl outside of dumping carter and flipping a third for another old guy. Pens made their bed with the deals to the two old guys. Caps who knows? They were in on horvat and could do something crazy like mantha deal again. Fla lacks prospects/picks/cap space to do anything. Wings are getting hot but have larkin/bertuzzi to worry about. Sabres have lost ground. So teams isles are battling with may not be able to do much as well. That's why lane needs to get a grip on this team NOW. Good show and ponderings once again.

  3. NEW YORK ISLANDERS
    NO-TRADE CLAUSES

    Anders Lee

    Brock Nelson (16-team no-trade list)

    Jean-Gabriel Pageau (16-team no-trade list)

    Adam Pelech

    Ryan Pulock

    Kyle Palmieri

    Semyon Varlamov (16-team no-trade list)

  4. The harsh reality is that Lou has failed once again, the isles ownership wants the team to look good on paper but make $$ first. I don’t know how the cap works but if Mayfield won’t accept a team friendly in the next week, he’s gone, see what you can get for Varly, Lee and Pelech, Parisi and Palmieri, in doing so, let them know that if they stay with the team they will be in Bridgeport
