2023 Trade Deadline Megathread – Part 2

Hey gang,

The 2023 NHL Trade Deadline is just days away, so now is a great time to start a thread for all things related to it. Feel free to post league-wide news, trade proposals, rumors, speculation, etc.

**The trade deadline is Friday, March 3 at 3 p.m ET**

Twitter folks to follow for the deadline:
– Max Bultman (Red Wings) [@m_bultman](https://twitter.com/m_bultman)
– Elliotte Friedman [@FriedgeHNIC](https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC)
– Pierre LeBrun [@PierreVLeBrun](https://twitter.com/PierreVLeBrun)

**Wings trades:**

– **Red Wings trade Filip Hronek and a 4th to VAN for a 1st (NYI) and a 2023 2nd round pick!**

Details: The first round pick Detroit is getting from Vancouver was originally acquired from the New York Islanders in the Bo Horvat trade. That pick has a condition attached to it — it will become an unprotected 2024 1st round pick if it ends up in the top-12 of the 2023 Draft

– **Red Wings trade Tyler Bertuzzi (50% retained) to Boston for their 2024 1st round pick (top 10 protected) and a 4th round pick in 2025**

– **Red Wings trade Jakub Vrana (50% retained) to St Louis Blues for a 7th round pick in 2025 and Dylan McLaughlin**

Did Stevie forget he already used 3 slots and was going to ship out JVR for a pick?

  2. SpiritBamba

It makes me laugh so much that yzerman backed out of that deal and now Chuck fletcher got nothing for JVR and flyers fans are so pissed lmao

  3. GoodBloke86

If we made all these moves just to watch Criscuolo and Czarnik and Luff and Erne for the rest of the year I’m going to be pissed

  4. Sckibble

The wild just robbed the ducks for klingberg

  5. CanOfCoors

So what does this team look like next year?

This deadline is disappointing as fuck.

Last we we got Walman and Sunny. Walman has been fantastic and Sunny was a regular.

This season we shipped out some long term members of the team and haven’t added anything with the potential to be meaningful to the team next year.

We may reap the benefits in 3+ years but it’s gonna be a rough ride.

Maybe next year we will bring up a ton of guys from GR and send college and Euro kids to fill their spots.

It’s getting hard to be excited for next season considering how much of a shit show GR has been. Doesn’t help that guys like Hanas are hurt.

More draft pics for Sunny. What a wild few days.

Between the last 2 deadlines we have come out with Walman, 2 1sts, 2 high seconds, a 4th a 5th and a 7th. We lost two long term roster players and gained one back, and traded two expiring that weren’t gonna be re-signed. You could argue the vrana trade was a win for us just by getting rid of him because he honestly might not ever get back to being a full time NHLer with his off the ice issues

I think Yzerman handled this deadline quite well to be honest. With the recent losing streak there was little point in trying to add or hold onto UFAs that likely wouldn’t resign just to get into the playoffs. If the Wings do make it into the playoffs, they don’t stand a chance against any of the legit contenders even with those players who were traded away. He got overall fair value in all of his trades.

People thinking this just prolongs the rebuild aren’t looking at the whole picture. If Yzerman was planning to keep the rebuild going for another few seasons then why sign Larkin? To me that extensions shows that Yzerman is just writing off this season as a “we tried but it didn’t go our way” and is going to be aggressive in the off-season or confident with players in the organization to make a better push for playoffs next season.

Fans may not like not going in for the playoffs this season, but it’s the most sensible way to move forward considering how loaded the east is this year. The rebuild may be seven seasons but for Yzerman it’s only been four and he’s not going to leverage the future for short term success at this stage.

well now what sucks is that we might still be too good to even get a shot at bedard or any other of those great prospects.

Glad to see Namestnikov get moved to a playoff team

  12. AlphaRemixHD

so are we basicly giving up this season? it feels like it with these trades

Personally I’m happy with this run up to the trade deadline. Vrana is the only trade that it seems like we didn’t “win”, but clearly Yzerman isn’t going to beg a team to take him from us unless there’s a huge underlying reason. With the way the East has bolstered up their rosters, we’re not competing with them. Selling was the right move. Honestly if there’s one thing I’m disappointed in is that we didn’t sell MORE in trading away Kubalik for assets before he potentially walks this summer. Even a trade and re-sign in the summer I would have liked.

I think a lot of people are feeling right now instead of thinking. If you look at this analytically, these are the right moves for the current state of the team. We are not ready for the playoffs. We’re better this year than last year thanks to coaching, assets, and a particularly hot goalie.

We’re positioned incredibly well now with the number of picks, the number of quality assets in the system, to take a “Wait and see” approach. If we come out the gate roaring next year, if we call up some assets and they show promise, we might be buyers at the deadline next year. Or we might not.

One big mistake I see people making is talking about timelines. There is no timeline for a rebuild. That’s why Yzerman said to be patient. All he can do is lay the groundwork so that when the stars align and the team is firing on all cylinders, we have the assets and the capital to hit the gas when we’re ready.

He’s not out to “buy” a playoff run that will end in disaster. He’s trying to build a team like the Lightning who can make a run at the cup multiple times over a 4-8 year period.

    – Hronek is the furthest thing from an Yzerman type defender. He is on a career year and his value is at it’s peak. This was a steal for us.

    – Bertuzzi wanted more money than ANY OF US would be comfortable with. We will need that cap space for the young core in that time. Hopefully he wins a cup with Boston and then signs out of the division, Boston is left with an empty cupboard during our window.

    – Vrana is a sad story. To me there had to more going on behind the scenes, but I’m not sure we’ll ever know. Helps our boys in St. Louis and hopefully he gets his game back. Better than buying him out.

    – Sunny. Damnit.

    – Larkin signed his 8 year deal. Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, Kasper, Berggren, Joe Fucking Veleno, Ras, Cossa, Husso, Hell – Zadina, Walman, Wallinder, Johansson remain with the team. Loaded up with draft capital and cap space. This is the Yzerplan.

  16. OberonsTitan

Overall that has to be the least active trade deadline but probably busiest stretch of activity leading up to the deadline. I guess teams got their guys earlier and said screw cap accruement. But teams that waited got an extra bottom 6 forward or D.

  17. MeshuGojira

    There’s a top prospect in ’24 with a last name of… Zetterberg.

Please let that Boston pick turn into a fucking Zetterberg.

I wonder when we find out who we were trying to serve as a facilitator for JVR? No doubt we didn’t want to take him on but could happily handle some salary work on a 3rd Party’s behalf.

  19. Positive_Possible397

The Holland core is gone (obvs besides Larkin). This was always the Yzerplan. We can finally put an era behind us.

  20. SpiritBamba

I think it’s very likely you see trade ups this year from us. We could easily trade into the first for another one if we wanted, and I see a scenario where we trade up to 3rd and draft Leo Carlson. I genuinely think we find our superstar in this draft, one way or another. 5 picks within the first 50 and we could still add at the draft by taking on cap dumps, we have the ability to really cement our future.

  21. bandofgypsies

Friedmann reporting on 32 Thoughts that the call on the JVR to Detroit deal only happened because there was an understanding that another deal with Detroit was happening to make that one possible. He’s saying it’s entirely on him now for reporting the JVR deal because he thought that other swap was fully on. Apparently whatever that other deal was obviously didn’t happen, and therefore the JVR deal fell off the map.

Anyway, the whole point is, I wonder what that other deal was that we were looking at that would have made the JVR deal “possible”…
