@San Jose Sharks

He had every right to be angry…

In last nights San Jose Sharks vs Colorado Avalanche game, Erik Karlsson was the victim of a high stick infraction to the face that clearly should have been a double minor. However, not only did it not get called, Karlsson wound up getting called for unsportsmanlike conduct! This set Karlsson off as he threw his helmet on the ice! After the 6 to nothing loss, Karlsson said he felt disrespected by the ref for such a blatant no call which caused his temper to boil over- for which he apologized. I cover it in todays NHL hockey highlight recap video!

  1. Yes, I am aware the official that I pointed out was a linesman and not the ref. Please read this:

They can stop play for situations where there are too many men on the ice, when objects are thrown on the ice from the bench or penalty box, or when a player receives a stick illegally. In those cases, the linesman will report the issue to the referee, who makes the call.

32.3 General Duties – The Linesmen are generally responsible for calling violations of off-side (Rule 83) and icing (Rule 81). They may stop play for a variety of other situations as noted in sections 32.4 and 33.5 below.

32.4 Reporting to Referee – The Linesman shall give to the Referees his interpretation of any incident that may have taken place during the game.

Should a Linesman witness a foul (above) committed by an attacking player (undetected by the Referees) prior to the attacking team scoring a goal, the Linesman shall report what he witnessed to the Referees, the goal shall be disallowed and the appropriate penalty assessed.

The Linesman must stop play immediately and report to the Referees when:

(xii) When it is apparent that an injury has resulted from a high-stick that has gone undetected by the Referees and requires the assessment of a double-minor penalty. (Rule 60)

  2. As a lifelong Avs fan…this sucked for Karlsson. I'm sick of the civility standard. Gord Dwyer is a HACK. He's lucky he didn't catch a stick to the face. Fuck the linesman, fuck the refs. It's time to bring AI and a panel review system into the game.

  3. The bad reffing we're seeing now is a positive feedback loop that started decades ago. Refs get berated, verbally assaulted, and sometimes even physically assaulted even at the Atom/Mite level. As a result, no sane people want to be refs and there's a pipeline issue. As the reffing gets worse, the abuse gets worse…positive feedback loop. I'm afraid to say this is only going to get worse.

  4. Imagine having a guy named Gordie Dwyer ruin your game. This guy is a clown and has no business officiating in the NHL.

  5. Every sport has this problem with refs seemingly not be held accountable. Why isn’t there a system in place that makes them accountable? It’s not right and there’s major financial implications that they have control over never mind the competition that should be the top reason why refs need to be held to a certain standard in every sport

  6. If there's a suspension because of Karlsson throwing his bucket on the ice because of a clearly missed call, it'll fuel the fire for those that say that the league is completely against SJ and wants them to be in anguish. That, or the ref in charge doesn't like SJ.

  7. Same thing in the Kraken vs Ducks game. Vince Dunn got hit high and drew blood. Didn't call it and he got pissed. Slammed his stick against the glass and they call him for misconduct.

  8. i get teh referee behind him not seeing the high stick but how did the other ref or the linesmen not see that? So i feel for Karlsson. As for Quinn? he's a clown and I couldn't wait for him to get canned when he was coaching NYR.

  9. Refs are the government players are the normal citizens refs will always get away with anything when there pair

  10. Ref needs a time out. You can’t miss that you are right there he didn’t bit his lip. Missed call my asx

  11. The entire ref team should lose that game's pay for misses like that. Doesn't matter if it has any effect on the scoreboard. You missed a blatant 4 minute call on one of the top players in the league and then slapped him with a penalty. Just disgusting officiating.

  12. I've been saying it for years; NHL refs need to face the media after games like players and coaches do. Maybe then they'd get more personally involved in their work.

  13. The rule is if there is blood. There should be Automatic review. It happened in the leafs game against New Jersey.

  14. I love how we can see the replay of this 5 seconds after it happens, yet the refs aren't allowed to look back at it and make a call.

  15. Karlsson has been screwed over by crooked refs his entire career. Disgusting.

  16. I'm a Kings fan and as such I'm supposed to hate anything to do with the Sharks but this ref is clearly an idiot and Karlsson deserved a 4 minute major penalty. The unsportsmanlike conduct is BS and I get why the Coach turned into Tortorella lol.

  17. I want to know why they bother having to refs on the ice… and I want to know what game they were watching ….

  18. Watched this live. (Full disclosure, I’m an avid Avs fan) The refs missed a few really bad penalties during the game. This one was pretty bad as well. If they weren’t already getting their ass kicked, don’t think he would have thrown his helmet. Refs should be required to review every call and non-call during and after each game!

  19. How about you make a video showing Logan couture hitting rantenen from behind. Straight cross check. Such a dangerous play.

I'm pretty sure that's why they didn't call the high stick here. Probably a makeup call

  20. It’s not like it was an insignificant amount of blood either! Like god dang, you think he just bit his lip on the play??? Unbelievable 🙄

  21. If they are going to review anything high sticking would be the quickest. The fact that it can be clear as day who got and did the high sticking but is missed so often is ridiculous.

  22. As an Avs fan, completely agree, these refs are fucking ridiculously bad this year. Sharks deserved that pp

  23. I’m an Avs fan, that shoulda been a double minor. Regardless, I hope Erik gets to 100 points this season. What a great resurgence for his career

  24. the more the players speak up and abuse the refs the less the League can do about it. really hope the day comes where we get a couple players a week complaining about the garbage reffing to the point were the nhl stops handing out fines and does something good for a change…certainly wishful thinking with Gary still running the show

  25. NHL officiating is actively bad for the league and it's popularity. A huge shift and culture change needs to happen if the NHL ever wants to be taken seriously

  26. Sharks gonna finish last in the league..they are awful..they really miss Timo.. apparently so does karlsson
