RED WINGS ROUNDTABLE ft. Max Bultman & Prashanth Iyer – Winged Wheel Podcast – Mar. 15th, 2023

With the dust settled after the NHL Trade Deadline and into the final stages of the season, it’s time to take stock fo the Detroit Red Wings, Steve Yzerman’s moves so far, and the future of the Yzerplan.

First, a quick recap of the snoozefest in Smashville, as the Red Wings fell to the Nashville Predators and Alex Chiasson’s net-front power play goal streak continued, as well as a quick look at Detroit’s standing in the race for Connor Bedard (4:05). Also, quick updates on Marco Kasper’s accolades and William Wallinder’s potential handedness in Rogle compared to Hockeytown (9:50).

We’re excited to have the whole crew for another Red Wings Roundtable, as Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit & Prashanth Iyer join the show to assess Yzerman’s moves to trade Bertuzzi, Hronek, Vrana, & Sundqvist, discuss whether the free agency acquisitions of Copp, Maatta, Chiarot, Husso, & others were a mistake in retrospect, & what Lalonde’s club has in store for next season. Also, what will Yzerman do to fill in gaps at defense behind Moritz Seider and scoring alongside Dylan Larkin & Lucas Raymond (12:40)?

Next, our 2023 NHL Draft Prospect Profile on the skilled but divisive Andrew Cristall (55:55), as well as some NHL news (including Gary Bettman & the salary cap, the Ottawa Senators sale, & expansion) (1:07:45) before taking your questions during Overtime (1:11:25) – enjoy!

  1. As a native Detroiter living in Nashville, I get to go to 1 game a year, and I don’t get to watch many games either. I was at the game in Nashville and man was it uninspiring.

My biggest take away was the Maatta is really solid defensively. I was impressed with his decision making in his own zone, especially below the goal line. Great signing by Yzerman.

On the other hand, Hagg and Lindstrom are even worse in person than on TV. They’re terrible in the defensive zone and don’t add much offensively. Lindstrom missed his assignment on the second goal. I can’t imagine either of them will be back next year. It’s too bad Pysyk has been out all year. Would’ve been an upgrade on the bottom pair

  2. Kasper makes the team next year and makes an impact I believe.
I said the same about Raymond when nobody give it a legitimate thought, and I'm predicting the same path for Kasper.
    Regarding acquiring a finisher/higher end talent I'm intrigued/pursuing Guentzel.
In the hypothetical of adding severson/nylander I think they're better than 94 points or 9th in the conference. When predicting the teams improvement after those acquisitions you also gotta factor in the teams internal growth. Kaspers impact coupled with the impact edvinson should have cant be understated. I expect Raymond to explode to a ppg player in his prime which should be starting in a couple years from now.
Not much to say about Seider other than consistent norris candidate.
The core is coming along, alot of shoulds in my comment, but I'm optimistic.
Regardless, the next 18-24 months will be both exciting and revealing!

  3. Still don’t understand why Yzerman wouldn’t give Vrana a chance to comeback. He is still young. Scored two goals tonight. Third goal since being traded.

  4. Funny 2023 mock draft picks in the top 50 for Detroit😂:

Detroit Red Wings 2023 picks first 2 rounds.
    2nd overall: Adam Fantilli
    *10th overall: Axel Sandin Pellikka
(Detroit Red Wings trade Filip Zadina to Vancouver Detroit Red Wings receives Tyler Myers contract and Vancouver's 2023 1st round draft pick 10th overall.)
    *16th overall: David Reinbacher
    (originally N.Y.I. pick)
40th overall: Noah Dower Nilsson (originally St. Louis pick)
41st overall: Kasper Halttunen (originally Vancouver's pick)
*42nd overall: Traded to Chicago (Detroit receives Arvid Soderblom)

  5. They need to balance out the Atlantic and Metropolitan geographically. Example how is Carolina not in the Atlantic and Detriot in the Metro. There are a few to look at.

  6. One thing to consider also is seeing if the better supporting cast elevates Zadina’s play too. Maybe a one last ditch effort to maximize his value to the team or as a trade asset. Would Berggren be as successful with weaker talent??? I get looking backward, but looking at player development there have been some wins. It also made it clear that we need a solid number 2 or 1B goalie. We know Ned isn’t that guy unfortunately.

  7. Is OHL that bad? (Im from Sweden) I barely hear anything about Amadeus Lombardi as a promising prospect within the organisation though being third in points in the OJL, 93 points in 64 games ie 1.5 points/game.
Are you guys anticipating his 100th point?

Thx guys for a great Red Wings channel🤘 THG is the only other nhl channel I regularly watch..

  8. I never hear anyone mention Annti Tuomisto as a potential defenseman on the right side. He was drafted in the second round after Mo Seider. He left Denver to play in Finland. Is he not considered one of the Wings better prospects?

  9. I get prashanths concerns about the "buying" that was done last summer, but i think signing two guys for more than two years was not as significant as you think. They legit just needed to fill the roster. What else could they have done last summer? I don't think it was buying frenzy. We still have a MASSIVE amount of cap space for next year and beyond
