GAME RECAP: Penguins at Avalanche (03.22.23) | Crosby Scores 30th Goal of the Season

The Penguins started their two-game road trip at the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night. Captain Sidney Crosby started the scoring a minute into the 2nd period. A neutral zone pass from Jake Guenztel set up Crosby to enter the zone and shoot the puck backhand past the Avalanche goaltender. Minutes later, Guentzel picked up a goal of his own on the powerplay. Evgeni Malkin kept the puck in at the blue line and launched it back on net. The rebound popped up in front of the goaltender and Guentzel was there to bat it out of the air and in the back of the net. Halfway through the 2nd, Colorado responded making the score 2-1 for the Penguins. Jeff Carter, minutes after, was on the backdoor of the powerplay to tap in a quick feed from Bryan Rust. The period ended in favor of the Penguins, with a score of 3-1. Moving into the 3rd, the Penguins kept the pressure on the Avalanche, generating multiple scoring chances. The Avalanche cut the deficit in half bringing the score back within one goal. But Carter was not done for the night. A perfect pass to the front of the net from Brian Dumoulin on the point where Carter just tapped it around the netminder, giving him his second of the game. Colorado, down by two, pulled their goalie with four minutes remaining. Rust got the empty net goal to seal the win for the Penguins 5-2.

  1. Stellar performance against the defending cup champions tonight. Carter did good this game, and it definitely showed with how we eventually came out to win. Unfortunate Jarry couldn't get a goal but there will come another time. To get even 2 points out of this road trip against 2 central powerhouses is huge. If we can take down the Stars tomorrow and keep playing like how we did tonight and against Ottawa (play wise, not score wise) I believe our other only true challenges will be the Bruins, Devils, and Wild. Lets bring it all against the king of the central.

  2. Wow. The captain leading the way with a backhand beauty. Nice one by Guentzel; realllly hope his ankle is OK. Good for Carter and Rusty.

  4. If you want to know how to gain maximum leverage on a backhand shot just pause the video at the moment Crosby releases that puck. My goodness what a freak of nature. Pure physical genius.

  5. This was an all-around well-played game by the Pens…honestly…if we'd have played like this all season we might be in first place. Great to see a game like this anytime tho – I'm thankful for the win against a great team.
