The Cult of Hockey's “Oilers pepper Reimer, beat him in OT” podcast
Let’s do this! The Cult of Hockey podcast. By the Faithful and for the Faithful, tonight with Bruce McCurdy and David Staples. They dig into Edmonton’s 5-4 win over the Sharks of San Jose.
Campbell made lots of saves and down the stretch and OT he was solid….I don’t think any one player played their best tonight. But they all are equally responsible for the win…and equally responsible for the tough parts in the game
People have made up their minds. Darnell Nurse is nowhere worth what he's signed for. Watching him make so many bad decisions is hard to ignore., but you guys tell me he's not so bad, which is probably true. I get it that he's playing against the best players in the league. His contract is what's going to make fans not give him any leeway.
It sucks, he is a good defenseman but he signed his contract at the perfect time for him to maximize his value. It'll probably hurt the Oilers long term.
Being ever so humble, in his post-game interview Ekholm down played his offensive effort in this game and further stated that he and the Shark's Erik Karlsson were two different players. Well, that's probably true to some extent, but from a defensive stand point Ekholm is far better than Karlsson and more importantly, Ekholm has become an ideal mentor for Evan Bouchard as well as becoming a vital anchor for the Oiler's defensive squad.
I usually like your pods but I’m tired of everyone harping on Campbell! The team in front of him tonight was NOT dialed in to the defensive side either. And how can he build up confidence when fans are so hard on him. He’s harder on himself then the fans are… and then he probably sees all the trash talk about him… can’t help. He made some great saves and ultimately gave the team the chance to come back & then win in OT. Anyway. You should watch the replay of the game Oilers+ 20 in 20… you can see he settled in. Kind of hard to “work” on your game… in practice! It’s been a bit. Changing his gear in the middle of the season… anyway. Exciting win for the Oilers but fans will always complain and trash talk Campbell… and Nurse!
Oilers fans can be as terrible as Leafs fans! Disappointing!
Oilers Fan 4 Life! Specifically a Positive Oiler Fan!
Hope your 100% ready to carry it all Mr Skinner. I don't see a big bounce back from Campbell to be very likely at all. Without Ekholm coming in and Skinner Stepping it way up, they'd be in trouble right now as far as making the playoffs imo. I knew Holland would deliver)
Another thing i dont like is in base ball when the ball is thrown to the first basenan and he touches the bag just 6 inches before the runner gets there and then the runner is called out just because of a six inch gap. So bogus. Why cant he be safe? Why do they have to be such sticklers for the rules?
So far Matthias and Nick have been prime acquisitions…. size and production were light before they got here…MAtthias has been prodding Nurse with some healthy competition ….Nurse has stepped it up.
This is not Playoff hockey and the Oilers Coaches cannot hide the truth much longer….Skinny and Connor and Leon have been covering up Coaching letdowns all year long….if no one brings it up it doesnt get discussed and then it doesnt get rectified and then we go down 4 straight to the Kings. Anyone wish to discuss that tire-fire of a game from a responsible Coaching perspective? Or shall we just give Woody another free pass because he has such a nice personality….huh?…anything worth saying once is worth saying ….Do you think the Refs are going to give Woodys boys a free pass because of Woodys sugar-coated personality?….ole Sugarlips did not even win one game against Colorado….and he has not to my eye fixed the problems in his work that were responsible for the 4 consecutive losses. If you dont make changes how can you expect a different result….Woody hasnt owned anything yet as an NHL Coach…once he does he will be forced to accept help and the Oilers will stabilize
I feel players when contracts are signed should have to have a standard to stick too or they get a pay cut or fired lol I dunno seems like something like that should be a thing
Jack Campbell was brutal. 7 goals scored, plus a few more posts and a Ceci save ! That’s absolutely unacceptable. I’m blown away at the amount bad goals allowed. Expected goals at 2, and somehow 10 pucks beat him😳🤯. If skinner goes down, the oilers are screwed.
This game reminded me of that game against Buffalo early in the season where Oiler were down a goal and fired a ton of shots in the 3rd period, and the opposing team’s goaltender just transformed into a brickwall. This one had different result, of course; very similar game nonetheless.
I seldom agree with Staples; but Campbell IS giving us 'decade of darkness' goaltending. He seems like a likeable guy and no one wants him to succeed more than I do, but they really need to call someone up. He's been saying the same things all year about improving his game and working with the coaches, but then he gets out there and hasn't improved at all. I can't see how he could possibly completely turn things around by playoff time.
No wonder Campbell is a nervous wreck out there. Oilers had worst D and team D tonight that I can remember. And they sleepwalk through the first half of the game. It was a bizarre professional performance.
The hope that Jack will find his starting role form should be put to rest now!…Declare Skinner the starter, and make Campbell the backup….Campbell has no confidence in his game whatsoever, goes down too early, goes side to side leaving large holes….The team needs to allow and prepare Skinner for the playoffs, physically and mentally. He can't be going into the playoffs wondering who's starting. Campbell should NOT start another game the rest of the way unless it's absolutely necessary, or to give Skinner a rest.
Ekholm, great night with 2 goals. Nashville: "Damn bud if you could score like that we would have kept you" Ekholm "You don't have McJesus, Draisaitl and the rest so I'll just win more things here instead". Look at the time on ice. Connor played the most, then Leon then our first defenseman Bouchard. Bouch got the minutes because he EARNED them. Honestly the depth shone through a lot in this game. First goal, pure depth. If you look at the more detailed stats you'll see that Bjugstad, Foegele, and Janmark had highly productive nights. Tonight we really won the faceoff battle. Five guys above 65% in the dot tonight totalling 39 of the faceoffs won vs 18 lost by those players. Hello. It's not like the others did awful either. Bjugstad had 17 faceoffs and won 8 of them. Jeremy Coupal wiped 3 possible goals off the board. In effect he got a hat trick. Yamo was buzzing. Reffing was awful. Kane played poorly. Look Campbell made a few big saves but it's like he's not set a lot of the time and his rebounds are really bad. Pitiful is really the word here. He's a big guy but he keeps trying to hug the ice opening up everything above him. Bjugstad really had a good game. He played limited minutes (wish Connor could have played 8 minutes LESS and had some of those given to the bottom six guys including Foegele and Bjugstad. Wish Kane was on the ice less too but for other reasons. He didn't help us this game. Loved the # of shots on net but still. Look it's 2 points. I'm good with 2 points.
Jack instills zero confidence, he looks small in the net, has terrible rebound control, and frequently is out of position and swimming after initial save! The good news is time is on his side…he has 4 more years to work on finding his game!
Dave and Bruce, you and many other pundits have pointed out the possible problems with Campbells mechanics, WHAT IS THE GOALIE COACH SCHWARTZ TEACHING HIM??? How come nobody looks at the coach? Maybe he's the problem?.☹
Campbell is finished for the year. I'm all for giving him the ol' college try next season, but from here on out we have to understand that every time he's in net the Oilers will need to score 5+ goals to win. Use him with caution based on that understanding. If he hasn't significantly improved by next December we need to get rid of him. Also, I can only assume that the media is going soft on him as a result of his previous well known mental health issues. Had he not publicly struggled previously, I can only imagine the lambasting he would be receiving right now. And not undeserved either.
Interesting how 4 goals that were called on the ice are turned over, Nuge gets literally tackled by the goalie with a tap in at hand and it’s not called, and we aren’t talking about the refereeing. To be refereeing that game and get 5 GOALS WRONG…4 of which we can thank God for video replay to correct….is a testimony of bad refereeing at its finest.
Campbell let in 7, but only 4 will go against his GAA – thanks to officials… so that helps. Great to see Jack propping up his stats & he gets the Win.. so should intimidate other teams if he does get the Playoff starts. Reimer did a good job too. Fortunate to get that goal in the last 3mins to get to OT, or SJ would have handed us a loss – but they are a powerHouse.
Campbell will eventually find his game. Skinner is Legit and our #1 . Even though the goalies of past struggled, there was always a chance they steal a game or post a shutout. I never feel like skinner or Campbell are going to let zero in. They both gotta learn how to win a game in net.
Campbell allowed 7 goals and 4 of the counted. Although not all the goals were his fault he got to stop some of them. I think Bouchard still needs more time practicing on the PP. I notice not a pass to him in the final minute of the Power Play. He looks like he lost his confidence last night because he rather passes the puck instead of shooting it.
Why can we not send Campbell down to bako for conditioning…I think it would do him a wired if good!…I’m sure we could get better games from Picard then Campbell!

Still those called back goals, it still makes Jack bad, he would have been pulled before the 3rd.
Campbell made lots of saves and down the stretch and OT he was solid….I don’t think any one player played their best tonight. But they all are equally responsible for the win…and equally responsible for the tough parts in the game

As the saying goes it is what it is.
He did not take a discount to help the team.

Soup isn't that great when it's cold we need hot soup so we all feel better haha

I agree coaches! Bring up Calvin quick “and see how he does”. I doubt Stuey can win the Stanley Cup alone. 33:29
Shouldn't Dustin Schwartz be correcting Campbell's or atleast catching his technique issues. Is that not the goalie coaches job
The Oilers win, but for some reason I feel uneasy when I should be elated that they won.
Bruce you hit the bullseye as usual
7 goals against with 3 disallowed sounds abt right for a Campbell game.
My hopes for a shutout by the end of the regular season is dwindling fast…
No wonder Campbell is a nervous wreck out there. Oilers had worst D and team D tonight that I can remember. And they sleepwalk through the first half of the game. It was a bizarre professional performance.

If anything happens to Skinner the Oilers are done….

boston: playoff game, dallas: playoff game, kraken: rusty nuts vs. the flying fathers, sharks: NOT A PLAYOFF GAME
keith, ekholm: it's like having a player coach on the the ice with you. or, if you will, a big brother — oh brother mattias you are so learned
soup's got the botulism
I like your current trend of showing us the 'biker vest' winner for each win! Always curious who the players choose
Dave and Bruce, you and many other pundits have pointed out the possible problems with Campbells mechanics, WHAT IS THE GOALIE COACH SCHWARTZ TEACHING HIM??? How come nobody looks at the coach? Maybe he's the problem?.☹

Ek is moving up the ranks of Valahalla from a Viking warrior to a Norse god pretty quickly. Love this guy.

I agree re Campbell….I can't even enjoy watching the Oilers play with him in net as I feel uneasy that every shot could go in.
sure looked like Oilers were off-side on their 1st Goal – but apparently refs missed that… sure got all the others
Campbell is 6”3 but somehow looks Jonathan Quicks size in net, without the form and technique.
Cue the Nurse haters
Campbell will eventually find his game. Skinner is Legit and our #1 . Even though the goalies of past struggled, there was always a chance they steal a game or post a shutout. I never feel like skinner or Campbell are going to let zero in. They both gotta learn how to win a game in net.
Get rid of Dustin Shwartz the goalie coach while you’re at it!!!
