He was my favorite player after Rod and Ron when I was a kid. Really underrated. He got a buzzer beater followed by an OT goal at a Devils playoff game in 2002 and it was about the loudest I ever heard the place.

As a young web reporter trying new things for the Internet, Josef always said yes to whatever dumb idea me or my boss came up with. The guys were generally apprehensive about doing different stuff because they didn’t want to look silly. But Josef always said yes. He became my go-to guy in the room. It got to the point where he would laugh when he saw me coming. Just a happy, fun dude and I think about him a lot.

I still get so upset when I think about that crash. Great guy, great player, and I wish we’d been able to keep him around that second time.

He was a great guy! I met him a few times when my wife worked for the team.
Just like for the reporting, he was always pumped up for the community service that my wife would take him to.
