Rangers Trade Marc Staal and a 2021 2nd Round Pick for Future Considerations

The Rangers get cap space. The Wings get a pick and Staal won’t cost them a lot of money.

  1. Win win trade
Detroit gets a 2021 2nd…giving them 12 picks in the 1st 3 rounds of the next 2 drafts.
    The Rangers have some options.
They can get all their RFA's locked up and still have around $7-8m left.
    Then..they can make a move…
Trade for Laine or Monahan or Johannsen.
Or just hold on to the space and use it for a deadline deal next year. The Rangers are set set up for the next half decade

  2. So Fair deal because Detroit gets a good pick and a veteran d and the rangers get cap space

  3. As a Rangers fan future considerations sounds like Detroit might be interested in our No 1 pick Alexis I do believe its the perfect destination for him why would a no1 pick want to play with the Rangers on the 3rd line… If Detroit is interested as a Ranger fan my interest is Dylan Larkin it fulfill the need for both teams

  4. Huge win for the Rangers. Freed up a ton of cap space. It is sad to see Marc Staal leave the New York Rangers. He was an amazing defenseman. If he hadn't gotten injured so much, he had so much potential.

  5. Pointless trivia, but as of now, all four Staal brothers have been traded at least once in their careers. Jordan was traded from the Penguins to the Hurricanes. Eric was traded twice, first to the Rangers from the Hurricanes, and recently, from the Wild to the Sabres. Jared was traded as a prospect from the Coyotes to the Hurricanes.

  6. Would not count out Staal being resigned to another deal with the Red Wings in 2021, Seider will need tutoring as well as some of the younger D prospects on the verge of joining the roster. Staal provides veteran presence on the blueline and some stability that Ericsson/Daley just could not provide anymore.
This trade is a win/win for both teams as NYR have some critical re-signings coming up.

  7. As a Ranger fan, I’m so happy but sad that it’s the end of an era. No one left from the 2014 cup run. But it’s a new journey and dynasty in the making.

  8. Is that a #19 jersey? You look awesome in red & white. Regarding defense, we need all the help we can get because our defense is nonexistent. #LGRWS

  9. Bout time the era of the stals came to an end. All brothers are overrated across the board.

  10. Staal's declined since his two head injuries—particularly the eye injury. The game at the same time has changed to more puck moving D which is not a strength of his. That said I'm a Rangers fan and Rangers fans are always shitting on somebody–he can play more than less a fairly competent defensive game. He's also a first class act and has always been a credit to the Rangers organization. Not going to lie though he ain't worth $5.7 mil a year or even close. It's a good deal for us to move him on but I do hope he does well in Detroit.

  11. What does this mean for the guys they have to resign? Does this add enough space to keep the key guys around?

  12. Good old-fashioned win-win trade for both teams, nothing wrong with that. Props on the Mickey Redmond shout-out.

  13. He will always be remember and loved. He was a work horse and I remember when he defended ovi and Crosby during the playoffs But rangers need that cap space. Good move. Staal will be a mentor and bottom d for Detroit. He will always be a ranger. Biden 2020

  14. What if Detroit keeps Staal for most of the season, he helps mentor the youngsters and has a reasonably good season, and then Detroit trades him to a Stanley Cup contender for another draft pick at the trade deadline? What would Staal's remaining cap hit be at that time?

  15. Steve Yzerman built the the Tampa Bay Lightning and he will re-build the Red Wings. If adding Staal for one year so be it. Yzerman got a #2 pick and that's what he wanted.
He will built the Red Wing like he built Tampa Bay. Yzerman had Jimmy Devellano as GM in his playing. Devellano built the Islanders as their head scout and built the Red Wings as their GM, great Mentor for Yzerman. Rangers just wanted to dump salary.

  16. Can you do a video about future considerations? I'd like to know when these have actually come into play and made a difference. I've never heard a report that included "X team cashed in on their future considerations they received from X trade in 2017". Could be interesting.

  17. When Staal was at his best, especially in the playoffs, he would always do a great job taking out Ovechkin and neutralizing him, his defense and value was always underrated imo.

  18. weaponizing the cap space is what Yzerman is doing. Krug is next before Oct 9th and perhaps a goalie like Murray or Fleury. Rossi or Jack Quinn picked in 4th.

    Hronek-Krug
    Nemeth-Seider
    Deykeyser-Staal
    Biega

  19. What is ''future considerations''? And how do they negotiate about something like that? 😀 Weird stuff for me, but I guess someone knows how it goes.

  20. It's an obvious cap dump by the Rangers and Detroit gets a second round pick. I also think Yzerman could possably trade Staal at the deadline to a team desperate for a defenseman if he has a descent year (Detroit would have to retain salary). He might not get much but even a low pick is something. If not, then after the year you just let him walk.
