Today’s video covers Ian Murray’s time at Preston, with Bob Morgan, who knew Ian for most of his life, recalling Ian and his legacy.
Ian was a loyal member of the Bullants for almost 30 years as a player. He also served on the committee for extended periods.
In previous interviews, Steve Hillam and Dennis Davey have spoken about Ian and his contribution to the club. Ian was an East Preston boy who grew up with the likes of Dennis Davey and Bobby Davey, John and Bob Morgan, Tony Garnett, Scratch Mitchell, Chooka Fowler and Stan Walker.
Ian was an excellent player who could score runs quickly and bowl with some pace off an easy and nonchalant approach. Due to a shoulder injury from baseball, he turned to bowling off breaks, and indeed very good off breaks. He played in all Elevens over the years, winning the bowling Average in every XI including the firsts. In that same year he also won the 2nds bowling average.
In 1974/75 he won the WJ Price Trophy presented by the VSDCA.
He captained 2nds, 3rds and 4ths at different times and had a profound impact on our younger players showing them the way to play hard nosed, competitive cricket.
