If playoffs were 1-8 tonight’s game would massively important to the entire eastern playoff picture, as well as a potential 1st round preview. Instead it is meaningless other than as prep

it isn’t meaningless in total per se.

It actually still has seeding impacts for later rounds.

The NHL are seriously masters of shooting themselves in the foot.

If the Rags beat us tonight then they could’ve been our 1st round opponent in a 1v8 playoff system. Imagine how intense this game would’ve been and it could lead straight into a best of 7?? Those are the kind of scenarios that actually spawn rivalries, not just forcing divisional opponents.

For once we benefited from this awful system. Tampa are an average team and an ideal matchup for the Leafs. Itโ€™s up to the players now to get the monkey off their backs. No excuses.

That’s something about the 1-8 format people don’t realize when fans complain about the current format.

It’s not just about “I don’t like the format because my team has to play X”, it’s also the fun of standing/scoreboard watching for days if not weeks at a time seeing who is finishing where.

Game 82 and Leafs still could finish anywhere from 2 to 4 and face Lightning, Rangers, Panthers OR Islanders

Knowing its us vs TB since October and we’re just playing another 70+ games of the year to determine home ice.

Not completely meaningless. Leafs have a chance to claim second overall in the league tonight. Yes, if they get past TB they will most likely end up playing the first overall team. Somehow get past Boston and they have home ice the rest of the way

If we play NJ or Carolina in the ECF seeding is super important. We could secure home ice all the way to the finals with a win tonight and a Carolina loss. Edit: Except for Boston of course.

What’s the first time breaker? RW? If so this game would have no implications Leafs would have home ice.

That said they need to move to 1-8.

Edit: I’m dumb and now realize the OP was talking about the Leafs potentially moving up to 2nd.

Honestly looking at this, it makes me feel like it doesn’t matter how it’s set up. The East is so fucking stacked. I have no clue who I’d even prefer to play in round 1. Any of the top 6 teams are fucking scary
