This sub is literally the worst. “I know that name, he’d be a great coach for the Caps!”

Only two people brought up outside of NA have ever coached in the NHL; Alpo Suhonnen and Ivan Hlinka, both hired in 2000-01. There’s a few others, like a few guys in the 50s were born abroad but grew up in NA, or Krueger who was born NA but all his prior experience was abroad, but even expanding the definition and throwing those in, you can count foreign coaches on one hand. Their records really don’t matter, because the point is that it just doesn’t happen. Now maybe since more foreign players have come through the NHL since the 90s, possibly there’s more potential, who knows, but there’s a pretty big weight of history against it and it might put a really unwanted spotlight on him.

Fedorov is also working against a lot of Russia factor which would make that spotlight super unwelcome. Like, even beyond the current situation, he’s also well entrenched having previously been GM there, playing a role in the Olympic team management and coaching, and just generally making bank. Then you add the current situation, and how plenty of Russians are under scrutiny in the NHL about their politics and preferences of warmup jersey, and it’s really hard to see him taking an offer for probably less with more stress and media bothering him about things outside his control.

Also, he’s our backup coach (I’m primarily a Wings fan), you can’t have him 😛
