Im all in on analytics, but trying to align this data about the Devs with the good ol’ “eye test” and I feel like Im having a stroke. What do ya’ll make of this?

This is actually extremely shocking. Maybe comforting? Definitely does not pass the eye test. I want to see what the model is actually calculating. Second half of game 1 we looked pretty good. Start of game 2 was pretty good. I’m assuming the is 5 on 5 play. Our special teams are what is killing us

We’re getting absolutely killed on special teams is it makes sense in a way.

Switch it to “all situations” and have another look. It’s the penalty kill and power play that are killing us. We are fine 5 on 5.

  4. I actually agree with it. I’ve been saying we’ve been solid 5 on 5. I’m not really concerned about our play there. It could be a little better from a defensive aspect (such as clogging passing lanes and blocking more shots), but I’m satisfied with the play overall.

It’s mainly been special teams that have hurt us. People see the final scores and think the entire games were disasters. No, it’s just that we’re incompetent on the power play (especially the first unit) and don’t take Kreider out of the play on the penalty kill. We need to focus on more cross slot passes to set up one timers on the power play.

We’ve been trailing for all but like 1 period in this series while the Rangers have had the luxury of sitting on a lead for most of the time. I wouldn’t think much of this. Let’s see how things go if we get a lead for a substantial amount of time and the Rangers are the ones that need to turn it up.

Also, it’s no surprise special teams and goaltending are big in this series. Hell, in the playoffs in general. Anyone who knew anything knew that staying out of the box and getting solid goaltending/timely saves was going to be important to success for us.

Start the game > good on 5v5 > make a stupid OZ penalty > Kreider scores on a deflection > Devils’ players lose their shit > Rangers run with it

Rangers just haven’t been that impressive 5 on 5. We’ve gotten passes to the middle and have skating room were just missing the net, not putting it around a very confident shesterkin and not putting our passes tape to tape.

I’ve tried to tell people in this subreddit but I guess only looking at the scoreboard and screeching that THE RANGERS HAVE PLAYED SO WELL AND DOMINATED IN EVERY FACET OF THE GAME makes them feel better.

I love analytics as well, but Corsi is worthless.
