The San Jose Sharks lost yet another overtime game, this time 4-3 to the Colorado Avalanche. Start by making the case for Danil Gushchin to stay up in the NHL for the rest of the season and that the Sharks might have found something in Jacob Peterson. Then continue to make the case for Erik Karlsson’s third Norris and look at how he compares to the rest of the Sharks’ defensemen, and Logan Couture’s underrated season. Finally, Kaapo Kahkonen had another strong game and a check-in on the Tankathon Standings.

What I always say about +/- is that it does have a use, but only for looking at outliers within a team. If a player is +30 and the rest of the players on the team are under +10, there's likely something that guy's doing well. Likewise a player who is -30 when the rest of his teammates are -10 or higher, that guy's probably doing something wrong.
In addition to the problems you mentioned where bad goaltending/your teammate screwing up could cause a minus:
Nearly every team every year gives up at least 1 shorthanded goal. A player who plays a lot on the power play can only be hurt by that since a PPG doesn't give a plus but a SHG against gives a minus.
A player on a bad team is going to have a lot of games where his team is trailing late in the game leading to a goalie pull and a lot of those situations will lead to minuses. Likewise a player on a good team will have a lead late in the game and the opponent will pull their goalie leading to pluses.
Edit: Forgot to add that it also could be more informative if it was a ratio instead of just a number. For instance if one player has 0 plusses and 5 minuses and another has 100 plusses and 105 minuses, both players are -5 as opposed to saying it was 100% minuses versus 51% minuses.
I agree with you JD, plus/minus is a garbage stat. Karlsson has been on the ice for 20 empty net goals this year! Karlsson had always had high give a way seasons, with high risk passes, come high rewards or failures. I'll take the failures for the successes.
My question about Eklund, Guschin, Bordeleau are their size! Guschin is 5 foot 8, Eklund isn't 5 foot 11, he was on the ice all the time this season! Bordeleau is 5'9 & these three boys are less than 180 lbs. I think a rough and physical team will kill these kids!
What do you think the team looks like next year JD? Hertl, Couture, Karlsson, Vlasic, Simek still on the team?
JD my boy
