Leicester Tigers v Bristol Bears – What Happened At That Scrum? | Rugby 2021

This has to be one of the most curious endings to a rugby match! Leicester Tigers have Bristol Bears on the ropes in the Gallagher Premiership encounter at Welford Road, but a yellow card see’s things get rather mixed up with John Afoa due to come back on.

John Afoa, having been taken off as a tactical substitution needs to come back on in order to keep the scrum contested. If he doesn’t then the scrum becomes uncontested, which might suit Bristol as they’ve conceded so many penalties already. Pat Lam and Steve Borthwick have an interesting discussion on the sideline!

This video is intended to simply provide some insight into what happened, not to cast judgement. That way you can make up your own mind!

  1. Lol the papers are calling that a mass brawl…literally not a single punch thrown…
    Highly dissapointed.
As for Pat Lam – there are times for honesty, but that probably wasn't one.

  2. Must by so shocking for the Leicester fans to experience cynical professionalism like that. Any know how Neil Back is doing these days?

  3. Looking at this clip…Pat lamb is a disgrace. Once he realises he loses a 2nd player ..John Afoa is fit!!

Rugby 🏉 deserves better than this. It isn't football !!

  4. Leicester getting done to them what they have been doing to other teams for years, dirtiest team to ever walk on a pitch. Well done Bristol

  5. mass brawl……what 4 players at most whilst their team mates endeavour to seperate them

  6. Shame the game had to finish this way. Definite lessons to be learned as it could have been handled better, starting with refereeing protocols.

  7. Worst people in this were: Pat Lam, touchline ref, John Afoa, Richard Wigglesworth and Nathan Hughes

  8. I think the ref gets it right but it's irrelevant, what the tigers player is saying to the ref at the end is totally unacceptable in rugby. that guy (I can't see his number) needs someone to have a word with him.

  9. a football ref channel asked me who are the more reckless disrespectful of the too hemispheres and i said the the north and it still stands in the south we dont run after the ref and harass him after a game

  10. Unfortunately rugby is getting more like football every . A total disrespect for the laws and the referee's , from the the players and the coaches

  11. To say that Leicester was robbed is an overstatement. For 79 minutes what were they doing? The Leicester players were clearly heard urging John Afoa to go on the field. Steve Borthwick protested to having a no-contest scrum and 2 man advantage. He then protested again when John was okay to play, what they wanted in the first place. No clear indication that a try would have been scored from the scrums to warrant a penalty try. Would have been different if a try was awarded when the pass was a mile forward. To now play the victim and accuse Pat Lam as a cheat is harsh and unwarranted. There is a reason why John was pulled out early from the game. To play the blame game and point fingers now just to suit your agenda is quiet deploring. Anyways great game by both sides.

  12. I think I saw the Leicester loose head boring in to try to win another penalty/penalty try. I do not like cheats, especially the kind that try to get opponents in trouble. Fitting that this tactic exposed the ball too quickly and was beaten by quick thinking. Of course other things may have been happening, scrums need sorting, blame is often put on the victims of foul play as things stand. This will encourage people to take the law into their own hands. Not a road we should go down imho.

  13. Nathan Hughes should be on a ban now. Harry Williams at Exeter did exactly the same thing ( joined in for the rough and tumble even though previously substituted) and was banned.

  14. What surprised me morning anything was nobody was discussing the possibility of a penalty try ! What does it take to have a penalty try these days after several attempts he gives a yellow card out which surely should’ve signified that was a penalty try? It was hard to watch as neutral

  15. Pat Lam's a good coach, but he was a lying piece of s**t here. Never trust a bloke who refers to himself in the third person.

  16. Surely if the substitution was officially recorded (correctly) as 'tactical', then that should have stood whatever the coaches were saying in the heat of the moment? Coaches should not surely be given the option of changing this??

  17. "The problem is you weren't fucking strong enough to give us a penalty try."
    "Which one?"
"All of them. You know what you did".

    Strong words from Tom Youngs.

  18. Great watch. That ball was still in the scrum though. Half-back shouldn't have taken it out of the scrum. Penalty Try. Ref was scared for his life hence why he blew the whistle lol

  19. John Afoa getting ragged by Wigglesworth is a site to see, like 2 pensioners at the boules😂😂
