New York Islanders fall in six games to Carolina Hurricanes — what come next? | Road to the Cup

The New York Islanders’ chase for a Stanley Cup came to an end on Friday night as the Carolina Hurricanes advanced to round two with an overtime win in Game 6. Gil Martin of Locked On Islanders runs through why special teams let the Isles down in a series where they performed quite well at 5-on-5, why Bo Horvat’s lack of production let New York down, Ilya Sorokin’s excellent play in a losing effort, and what comes next for the Islanders after a season that saw them go all in at the deadline.

  1. Really great video. I'm glad I stumbled across this channel. In my opinion, The Islanders were lucky to win game five. It was a forgone conclusion that The Islanders were going to lose game six, pretty early on in the third period. They were out of gas.

  2. Bo Horvat certainly underwhelmed in the playoffs this year. Maybe in the coming days we will get a clearer picture of the injuries but regardless I expected more of him.

  3. Hey Gil,

Thanks for the content you have put into your podcasts this year. I've enjoyed your positive and realistic commentary.

Would you move out Nelson? I really do like Nelson and what he has brought to this team the past 3-4 seasons has been really solid. He was a huge part (aside form Sorokin) of why the Isles made the playoffs. Maybe he is moved (sell high) and could go to a team like Winnipeg; especially if Dubois goes to Montreal. Maybe a Nelson for Ehlers could work?
I hope Bolduc gets a full year shot next year and continues to build on the growth he had this year. I think he can be a good LD3 behind Pelech and Romanov.
Do the Isles keep Mayfield? I love Mayfield and have been thankful for the tough minutes he plays each night and his loyalty to the team; especially on a bargain contract.
How low does Varly's contract have to be to keep him? I like Varly, but wouldn't want to give him more than $2.5 for 2 years.
Can Clutterbuck's body withstand one more season? I really love what Clutterbuck brings to the team. He's all heart and is the identity of this team, along with Cizikas, Clutterbuck and Mayfield. Fasching really asserted himself well and I could see him taking Clutterbuck's spot if Cal isn't ready to go through another year.
What happens to Bailey? It has been unfortunate to see his game fall off the way it has, but father time always wins and Bailey's style of game is not as suited to the fast paced game of the league these days. I'd hate to dump his salary and spend draft picks or a prospect. What do you think will happen here?
Would you bring Parise back for another year? I love Parise and his heart and soul effort. Could Durandeau fill in at LW3? I didn't mind Durandeau's short stint. He has great speed, 200' awareness and some skill. You lose Parise's experience, but eventually you have to make the switch over to the kids.
What are your thoughts on Iskhakov? I love his offensive side and wonder if he could take the physicality of the NHL. He could definitely help with the PP in regard to having high end skills guys on the ice. I wouldn't be against having him play with Barzal and Horvat (if they don't land Ehlers from point above). That would be a dangerous line. I just hope more of the danger would be in the other team's zone.
I expect Dobson, Romanov, Bolduc, Wahlstrom, Horvat and Barzal (because he is healthy and playing a full season with Horvat) next year.
I feel like Sorokin, Pulock, Pelech, Nelson, Palmieri, Mayfield (if he's back), Fasching, Pageau, Cizikas and Engvall (if he's signed) can give you similar performances to what we saw this year (hopefully a bit better from Pelech).
One would expect regression (further regression) from Lee, Parise, Clutterbuck and Martin.
Not sure what to expect from Holmstrom and Wahlstrom.
Can Wotherspoon make it? What about Aho and Salo?
Fulp had a nice end to the season with Bridgeport as did Maggio and Dufour had a pretty good rookie season too.
Outside of that and having no 1st round pick, it will have to come from Free Agency or trades to improve this team further…with limited cap room.

I hope you have a good summer and the excitement of a new season next fall.
    Let's go Islanders.

  4. I just hope that Lou doesn't keep in touch with too many ex or retired Devils or the Isles will field the oldest team in the history of hockey next year. Can't get on Horvat too much as he was clearly overachieving this year with Van before the Isles got him. He's MAYBE a 60 point man if he elevates his game.
