Doug Armstrong on Barbashev trade, Kapanen acquisition

St. Louis Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong comments on the Ivan Barbashev trade to Vegas and the acquisition of Kasperi Kapanen from Pittsburgh.

  1. The Kapanen acquisition might not be the biggest move recently, but a change of scenery could do him well and if he does bounce back then this would be seen as a brilliant move on DA’s part. Here’s to Kappy getting his game back

  2. Barbashev, Acciari, ROR and Tarasenko were going to be traded pretty much no matter what. Now things get interesting. How far will the rebuild go? Parayko, Krug? Flipping picks for young NHL talent? The next 4-5 months will be fascinating and pretty much set the table for the next 4-5 years for this organization

  3. Doug Armstrong u need to fix this. The defense is atrocious because u created job security by handing out pre mature contracts. There is no other way of putting.
It is clear that players like Torey Krug and Colton Parayko have non-chalant attitudes because they have long term stability.
Be a man Armstrong and right your wrongs. You don't even have to trade these two defensemen if u bring in two stay at home defensemen.
One that will play with both Justin Faulk and Parayko. Which will limit Krug's awful five on five minutes, and primarily play Krug on the power play.
Get rid of the God awful contracts of Marco Scandella and Robert Bertizzo to create space.
If u don't do this Armstrong then watch this team struggle again next year and just know YOU we're the main reason this Stanley Cup run ended Doug!!!

  4. GM since 2010 1 Cup 2019. More of the same good teams but not great, make the playoffs and out golfing, since 1967 . We need these 1st rounders to mean something, look at last 5 years draft selections who is in the NHL?

  5. I like the pick up of Dean. He's a point per game player. We need more scorers now especially. Defense. Clean house. By Krug, Parayko, and Leddy. Let Calle Rosen play and get some gunnerson type defensive guys. Can't get any Pronger types anymore. They don't really exist.

  6. (Meant to direct this to the Ralphjenkins comment.) Amen, to almost all of your comments with some minor exceptions. The Krug and Parayko contracts are the God awful ones. However, Marco Scandella’s is only for $3.3 million and only for 1 more year after this one. If Scandella plays well the rest of the season that’s a moveable contract, if he waives his NTC. It’s been a bad contract considering his overall poor play and injury history since it was signed, but comes no where near to being the nightmare Krug’s and Parayko’s contracts currently are.

Also, Bortuzzo’s only making $950k for 1 more year after this one without an NTC. That’s pare for an NHL depth defenseman. Also, considering the low salary and term, it should also be trade-able. Last, at least Bortuzzo’s not afraid to check people and has the size to do it.

You didn’t mention the Leddy contract, but I will in the context of a key point you made. That being that the Blues’ needed a top-4 defensive minded defensemen to complement their puck movers. There’s nothing wrong with what Leddy brings to the game. He’s just not what the Blues needed when he was signed. Add that to the fact that he’s signed for 3 more years with an NTC and that makes it another bad contract under current circumstances.

I’m going to give Armstrong a bye on signing Parayko. I don’t think anyone expected him to regress as much as he has. (At least he wasn’t signed for $8 million/year.) But, the Krug contract is a totally different story. What in the world was Armstrong thinking when he signed an injury prone, very small, power play specialist to top-4 defenseman money and term? The guy doesn’t have the build to be a top-4 defenseman. You can clearly see that almost every game he plays. Parayko may still regain his abilities, just like Boumeister did after his hip surgery. But, you can’t fix Krug’s small size. Small defensemen are going to get outmuscled along the boards and in front of the net by larger NHL forwards the majority of the time. It’s simple physics. Krug is fearless, he’d be great if he had Parayko’s size, but… The Blues need to bite the bullet even if it hurts Krug’s feelings (maybe that’ll make him waive his NTC) and play him on the 3rd pairing. That is when they finally get a good defensive minded defensemen to pair with Parayko, Faulk, or Leddy (whichever ones they still have). Right now it wouldn’t make any difference to move Krug down a pairing because no one they have is defensively better. Which is very telling about the current team.

In a related note, Armstrong and Blues’ fans better pray that Thomas and Kyrou earn the money that they’re being paid going forward. Otherwise, considering the current defensive problems, this team is in for some nightmarish seasons.

  7. Translation: I already gave up on the current team / season but I expect the remaining players to keep playing like I still believe in them this season.

  8. ‘’’ok . We need speed. And SCORING DEFENSE that’s all grit. No matter what , win loose or tie I bleed blue till I die . But if it’s shake-up Tyne LETS GOO BLUES

  9. Do you understand that when an NHL player hits 30 years of age, he is getting old? When an NHL player turns 32, his considered pretty old. I got to give Armstrong credit. He has brought tremendous value for some beat-up aging players on the downside and has maybe three years of good productivity left that doesn't fit in our window anymore. Hopefully, Doug remains patient and drafts some tremendous young talent to all develop together as Chicago, and Tampa Bay did. If Doug feels the pressure rushes and gives 2 picks for one good player, we could be in trouble.
