Teuvo Teravainen scored with 2:33 remaining in the third period, and the Carolina Hurricanes came back to defeat the New York Rangers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.

Brent Burns had time to bring the puck in from the right point and find Teravainen in the slot for a redirection goal that put Carolina ahead 3-2.

Jalen Chatfield and Stefan Noesen also scored in the third, and Frederik Andersen made 28 saves for the Hurricanes (46-15-8), who have won three of their past four games to maintain a hold on first place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Hurricanes have also reached 100 points for the second straight season and third time in their history.

Tyler Motte and Kaapo Kakko scored, and Igor Shesterkin made 37 saves for the Rangers (41-20-10), who had a four-game winning streak and seven-game point streak end (6-0-1).

The Rangers are third in the Metropolitan Division, eight points behind the Hurricanes.

New York and Carolina combined to score three goals on three straight shots in a span of 49 seconds midway through the third.

Chatfield tied it 1-1 with a rising shot over Shesterkin’s blocker from the right face-off circle at 9:49, ending the Rangers’ streak of 16 consecutive goals.

Kakko gave New York a 2-1 lead 31 seconds later at 10:20, scoring from between the circles off a rebound of Ryan Lindgren’s shot that was blocked by Burns.

Noesen scored just 18 seconds later, tying the game 2-2 at 10:38 with a one-timer from the slot off a pass from Jesper Fast out of the right corner.

Motte gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 17:00 of the first period on a one-timer from the slot off a pass from Barclay Goodrow, who was behind the left circle.

  1. Not happy with this result, but can't be too angry either. The Rangers were definitely caught flat-footed since they trashed two teams that are not as good as Carolina, and the defense did have a bad day in the 2nd and 3rd periods. They at least have another opportunity to beat Carolina on Thursday on the road if they take this loss as a wake up call. At this point, what's done is done, learn what went wrong, and move on. It could be worse to be honest.

  2. Igor is the entire rangers defense. Not getting anywhere with only offensive minded players in Kane and Vlad who are leaving their primes. Especially not against Stanley cup contending teams. Should’ve gotten a D man at the deadline. Team had enough offense already…

  3. Got out played ! Power play kills us 0-3 it does amaze me how you don’t curse where was your video last night when they won on the. Road vs the hurricanes just wondering I can’t find your video.

  4. The Canes eliminated the Rangers time and space. Igor was awesome as usual. Not a terrible loss. Better luck on Thursday

  5. That first goal for Carolina was ridiculous by a nobody bum 5th defenseman shooting like a star right winger.

  6. Carolina was ready to play and the Rangers were not. Igor kept them in the game. They will need to step it up in Carolina on Thursday or 1st place will be out of reach and maybe 2nd.

  7. As a Hurricanes fan I was waiting for you to see that trip by KK that went uncalled. It's a shame that such a great period was capped by that kind of crap, but from the greener side of the grass it's just really funny to watch.
