Ryan O’Reilly acquisition a ‘massive win’ for the Maple Leafs

TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button shared his thoughts on the Maple Leafs’ acquisition of Ryan O’Reilly, and how he will fit in with Toronto’s squad.

  1. Moving Marner to the first line and bring down Nylander to the 2nd. The idea is to use Oreilly as the setup man for Tavares and Nylander. Use Marner as the setup man for bunting and matthews. Hate Dubas but hats off to this trade. Ryan is the set up man more than the scorer just look at his career assists

  2. this trade will not age well, like all Dubas trades unless Murray comes back and stands on his head, ROT turns a poor season around come playoff time, ROR turns Engvall and Kerfoot into tough competitors and Acciari turns Aston into one too.
Not to mention the top 6 getting playoff tough (no crying and clearing the puck into the stands) and an end to the countless untimely defensive lapses (Holl v Ott for eg or marner and the no look passes) not to mention the team finding that killer instinct.

Maybe ROR triggers this miracle….. just maybe.

but the likelihood is that we miss out on a god player in the draft, TB wins, or Bos wins if we beat tampa, and ROR walks for more money in the summer like half the roster.

the leafs owner Tanenbaum, the GM, the team on the ice and their fans are fascinating.

  3. Boston is shitting their pants with the acquisition of ROR… you know why? Because we are playing them in the 2ND round

  4. o'reilly is washed up…leafs have long history of bringing in guys who used to be good and supposedly are bringing character (immensely over rated)…leafs will lose again in the first round…spending 1st round picks and destroying leafs future…soon will be in rebuild mode again

  5. I mean this means nothing until they win a round: which I highly doubt they can with this core. They haven’t in what, 6 different seasons, why should I expect anything with the 7th?

  6. Over the hill, over paid bcoz 0f the many picks for a very short rental that will not make a difference. Nevermind he is regressing and having one of the seasons of his career.

  7. LOL, they better win this year because they just gave away their future. They are like the LA Rams of the NFL hope it works out like it did for the Rams.

  8. Did Minnesota get screwed in this deal? They get a 4th rounder and get stuck with a quarter of O'Riley's salary and lose a prospect. I'm selling my house in the spring………

  9. Good trade by Dubas. Cost the Leafs a few low crummy picks they don't need anyways.

  10. Dubas is about out of time and moves now. If this doesn't work the next guy will have to be the one to make hard choices and fix his imbalanced roster. The asset pool can be replenished by trading out some of the core before they won't re-sign for anything but too much money. They need someone to stop the vicious cycle if possible.

  11. O'Reilly is an elite Selke defensive forward/center who at best could produce at least 50 points for a season, he's basically a very good two way forward or even more specific he's good on both sides of the puck especially defensively.

He's in the category of elite defensive forwards or elite two way forwards like Anthony cirelli from Tampa, Philip Danault from L.A., Patrice Bergeron from Boston, Mark Stone from Las Vegas, Bo Horvat from New York Islanders, Anze Kopitar from L.A. and Alexander Barkov from Florida, there is others for sure but I named enough. I realize Crosby deserves to be in that conversation as well most ppl just think of him as an elite offensive player and that's it but he's very good defensively as well especially now that he's older and not as explosive he has to adapt.

So far this season O'Reilly has only 19 points and he's a -24 but if you look at some of his past season stats, he did have some good seasons, so players are going to have off seasons at least once in their careers, he's only 32 even some players may age quickly at a younger age.

  12. First game tonight and he was so timid. How did he win a cup and Con…okay…kidding. He demanded respect. The price paid is worth every penny!

  13. I'm a sens fan, but I kinda hope the jets and Oilers make a big trade too. It would be nice to have 3 Canadian cup contenders

  14. Leafs gave up way way too much for this clown. See you crying about it when you lose your top draft pick year after year… Kyle D is insane!

  15. The Leafs need Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander all on deals like O’Reilly if they want to truly win a Stanley Cup. Otherwise it’s not going to happen for them. Ever. I hate the Bruins but in all honesty they have all their core guys on team friendly deals. That’s one reason why they are successful so often year after year. You can’t be strong in only one area of the ice and expect to win. The Leafs have concentrated only on offensively gifted players. Scoring goals is great but they won’t win games if they can’t keep the puck out of their own net.

  16. you want to win in the playoffs, you win down the middle, goaltending and conistsent defenseive play. this guy can play literally every situation. he won what, 86% of his draws last night?

  17. "Massive Win"?? We don't know until the playoffs – this guy is getting older and is not having an epic year. And has been injured a lot this year as well. You can say on the surface it is a nice acquisition and I would agree – but if they don't win at least one round heads will roll as they won't have many prospects or draft picks left next 2 years.

  18. And of course instead of having Oreilly center the third line they move Tavares to wing and don’t utilize the center depth….

  19. This is a massive L for the leafs. ROR is an over the hill vet who is having a terrible season. What a joke.

  20. Past his prime, best days behind him, another example of the Leafs trying to win yesterday's Cup.

  21. SABOTAGE Dubie has caused huge ripple effect on going problems. Dubie has sold the farm and the future as a desperate move to keep his job.
Shany Dubie Keefie are the problem and not the players.

  22. Craig Button LOL this guy knows nothing! Waste of all those draft picks for two over the hill players. Leafs are SOFT and out in the first round again!

  23. More Dubas magic. Tbh, I'm just as excited about the acquisition of Acciari as I am of O'Reilly coming to the Leafs. Two solid additions!

  24. To me, this trade feels like Butch Goring going to the New York Islanders and Ron Francis and Ulf Samuelsson going to Pittsburgh.

  25. The fact that Craig is saying anything positive about the Leafs is a serious tip of the hat.

  26. the bruins are a different team than the one we seen in 2019. they're out for blood.
