  1. Good points by Button. Having said that, you can't win if all of your top players are playing at or near market value in terms of their cap hit. The Canucks have too many overpaid players. Hronek isn't overpaid yet, but he will be after next season. You win in this league by having guys either taking big discounts to stay or you draft them and they make an impact while on ELC. The Canucks have too much invested in underachieving players. That draft pick could have been a Hronek type of defenseman. Sure, he might not have played for a few years, but if that means you have to sell players in the prime that you like, fine. It's no use having them put up top numbers and get paid big bucks here while the team struggles. In the end, it's about team results. If this group isn't getting it done, it doesn't matter how good they are individually. It's the collective results that matter. They should be selling off assets, even ones they like, so they can actually do it right and go for a championship at some point. This group can't get it done. That's obvious. All Demko does is take a team that is in the bottom 5 of the league at best and makes them a bottom 10 team. They still finish outside the playoffs. So what's the difference? Yes, Miller scored 99 points last year. Pettersson and Hughes are having career years. In a lost season. Again, team results matter. Individual results are fun to a point, but all I care about is where the team is. I hate when people treat the players like they're their boyfriends.

  2. Well Hronek is a good start for reinforcements to the back end

  3. With the Hronek deal the canucks just add more cap issues. Pettersson and Hronek contract is up at the same time, Petterson will probably ask around 8.5 to 9 mil and depending on Hronek play will ask for 6-7.5 mil.

Hopefully Hronek's play continues but between them the low end is14.5 mil between two players.

  4. Question. How does one “retool” effectively with no Cap space, limited draft picks and no prospects of significant value?!?! Seriously it seems illogical to retool with no resources to do so.

  5. Button’s got a point. As much as Donnie doesn’t want to hear it that Islanders pick wasn’t getting better over the course of the season.

  6. On the other hand what an indictment on the Canucks organization if the Arizona Coyotes win a cup before we do because of there picks.

  7. Hornek is damaged goods… You'll get maybe 60 games a season. He has NEVER played a full season of pro hockey. AAAaaand I see no reason at all for him to resign after next year.

  8. The only people who complained about the deal asides from some of the media are a some of there fan boys lol

  9. I hear what Button is saying. However, watching another GM use our high draft pick…again 😢

  10. I'm not there yet, but I think I may stop being angry at the Hronek trade. Our defense is bad, but Demko needing surgery is the single biggest reason why the Canucks are having a bad season. We may have a good season next year. I just hope they have a plan in place to pay for Hronek if they do. And if we get Bedard by some miracle . . . ah, I'll just stop there.

  11. If Aidan McDonough follows what Button says, why would he sign with the Canucks with their glut of left wingers?

  12. How many "retoolers" in the cap era (so since 2006) have actually won? The only immediate recent example that springs to mind is Pitt, in 2016 and 2017. Even then, they still had those lottery picks in Malkin and Crosby making big contributions. I think you may need to go all the way back to the 2011 Bruins. Feels far more common for a team that "tanked" and got a high pick to go on to success.

Also, you need to consider that many Canucks fans still have PTSD from the Benning "age-gap" years. The very word "retool" has a Clockwork Orange like effect on these folks, myself included. I think it's just the culmination of so many years of failure and inept management that is creating so much noise on the Hronek trade. Giving up futures for a "win now" player reeks of Benning, so folks are rightfully skeptical of that approach, given what we've already endured with this team. That said, Hronek is a really good player, and I can see why Button is high on him. Just the wrong time for Van.

  13. Hronek was an overpayment. They should have traded Lekkerimaki and a 2nd instead of the Islander 1st.

  14. Craig Button building a strawman… it's not just a 1st. It's a 1st, a 2nd and diminishes our 1st(makes us better when we don't want to be). We traded picks for a player, when our picks are worth the least and the players are worth the most. If you're going to make an argument, dont build a strawman and lie about it being 1 pick just to satiate your ego. Pathetic.

  15. Canucks were only 6 points just a couple weeks ago, all of a sudden they start winning now why? 🤔 Bedard, Fantilli, Michcov, each one of them are No. 1 overall draft pick type prospect. They are worth losing games for especially Bedard a North Vancouver Star 🌟 Grow a Brain 🧠 Canucleheads, why are you winning now ? Canucks are turning things around at the wrong time ⏲️ Can you say " Groundhog Day" Canucks don't deserve a talented player 👏 like Bedard. I hope the Sharks 🦈 Ducks 🦆and Coyotes 🦊 get him and then Canucks will regret it dearly for years to come ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

  16. Button bang on!!!!!!! It was a good trade!!!!!!! Nucks fans are just so used to every move being bad that we don’t recognize a good one!!!

  17. Craig Button's take on the Hronek trade is a reminder why he flaps his gums for a living instead of running an NHL team.

  18. does Button not know it was a 1st and 2nd or is he just leaving that out to help his argument? Donnie should have called him out onthis

  19. Filip Hronek wil is top four Canucks D, To draft a player it takes three years before any player makes top four on D. I love the move. Add Jacob Bengtsson and bring in Tag Bertuzzi we will be even better.

  20. It's a great trade canucks fan com'on people when will you recognize WE NEED D and we need it now. We need it next year and they'll get em signed.. he's also right shot and he's a stud. There's 0 guarantee from a 1st rounder in the position that they would have picked from. This is a win!
