I think they should’ve gone with Vitek for game 1 just to give Akira some rest as he’s not used to such a heavy workload. It’s like Boston who would basically switch goalies every other game during the regular season and then fucked themselves by having Ullmark play 6 straight games in the playoffs when he’s not used to it. Goalies these days don’t have Marty’s endurance.

Vitek has honestly been shaky for a far longer time than many would think. By the end of January he was rocking a .917 and a 2.29 GAA in 32 games, but then from February to April he had a .900 and a 2.69 GAA in 20 games. His last five games to close out the season were strong with .927 and 1.93 GAA and I was thinking he’d might be heating up for the playoffs, but those were against Buffalo, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg and Rangers, so it was really just a question of easier matchups.
I don’t know what it is, it might be a nagging injury, it might be 32 games out of the 49 games simply being too big of a workload, but whatever it is, I hope next season we won’t run into the same problem.

Poor VV, dude gave us a great regular season for the most part. Now akira is nipping at his heels, and really set himself as the successor with his playoff performance.
Then there’s Blackwood who has lost the starter spot twice now.

I’d be interested to see Ruff’s explanation for why he started Vitek in game 4. Yes they won game 3 but it didn’t have anything to do with goaltending and everything to do with the 8 goals they scored. 3 SHGs should be enough of a warning not to tempt fate again.
I genuinely like the Vitek and he seems like an awesome guy. I will also always appreciate that he gave us the stable goaltending we had been missing and it led to our best regular season ever. But even in the season he was average at best and he’s not it in the playoffs.
I would be open to looking around this off-season and seeing if there’s a premier goalie the Devils can trade for. And then going with Akira as the 1B

Ruff was asked about his decision to start Vanecek last night and he pointed to 1) Vanecek winning Game 3 and 2) the fact that he shut out Carolina in early March. So we didn’t start Schmid because Vanecek was fortunate enough to be in net when the team in front of him scored 8 goals and because he had a good game against Carolina two fucking months ago.
