Connor McDavid elbow on Alec Martinez – Tough Call Review

The elbow of Connor McDavid does make contact with the head of Alec Martinez, but it’s a case of head to elbow rather than elbow to head.

  1. natural position for an elbow? i think we can agree to disagree here. Connor McDavid is the BEST hockey player ever. Maybe Lemieux is close in terms of dominating the puck. McDavid is an uber-elite athlete and he knows exactly where everyone is on the ice and even knows before even Martinez himself does – what angle and how Martinez will be coming in. Thus, his elbow is waiting there for Martinez to hit it. This can never be a penalty because no one on the ice thinks as fast as McDavid so they can't see what we can see with the advantage of split frame technology. In reality it is a penalty but there is no definition under the penalty of elbowing for what McDavid does. It is not an "accident" as you suggest that Martinez hits McDavid's elbow, it was orchestrated and pre-ordained by McDavid. A simple dumbed-down example on a much more understandable scale that we have all seen is the reverse check. McDavid is INSANELY talented and mentally/physically so far ahead of the other players that we are left trying to catch up and understand his thought process after the fact!!

  2. If it was another player, I might agree, but McElbow has a history of hitting players with the elbows to the head.
