> With this announcement, the Flyers have finalized their new management structure. The President of Hockey Operations will lead the strategic direction for all aspects of the hockey operations department while collaborating on business goals. The General Manager is responsible for all hockey decisions as it pertains to signings, trades and draft picks as well as overseeing scouting, player development, roster construction and more. Head coach John Tortorella will remain boss of the bench and like most head coaches in the NHL, he’ll provide input on various management topics.

Funny thing is that Jones is by far the best hockey analyst on TV and he’s totally been sidelined for perhaps the worst intermission shows ever.
If you want to stop traveling so much, it makes sense. Also NBC destroying the old CSN infrastructure, pretty much makes travel necessary if you are doing TV.

The New Era of Orange: where we continue to hire former Flyers from the old era
4Darco
God, please let this work out.
Perryplat199
Bold strategy taking 2 fan favorite alumni with 0 nhl FO experience and making them the face of the team. Maybe they think we won’t get the pitch forks if this doesn’t work out.

2023 Flyers ownership: It’s time to clean house and clear out the old boys club from the 70s/80s and start fresh. Also 2023 Flyers ownership: Let’s hire a bunch of former Flyers from the 90s/00s. That should fix things.

I’m never going to see a Stanley Cup
ManFromPhiladelphia
I guess I’m just not going to shit on these guys until it’s deserved.
They’ve both said all of the right things about this organization and team. Danny’s already shown he’s ready to start ignoring the outside influence from the old Flyers. Jonesy is very well respected within the NHL’s business circle from everything we’ve been told.
I’m tired of being constantly negative about this team. I want to believe these are the guys that are going to turn this around and I’m not wasting my energy poo-pooing the hires until I need to.
Regardless of who got hired, Reddit was going to hate it.

Everyone over reacting and it could backfire but Meltzer said
“This would not be a traditional club president or director of hockey operations role, as the Flyers envision it. As described in general terms, President of Hockey Ops will be a public communicator, a liaison between Hockey Ops and other facets of the organization. He’d work with, but not over, the GM.”
He also said in same article we are looking to fill a new position of the more traditional responsibilities of dealing with the roster/management etc.

I’m torn. Jones seems like a great person who deserves a shot at doing something awesome. But after years and years of hiring former players I’m over it.
I hope him and Briere do really well and prove me wrong, but this organization has tanked my ability to give a shit about this sport.
UncleGrako
Danny Briere still looks like a rookie.

Looks like an Alternate captains release…

I’m excited. Jones is a guy we’ve had the privilege of listening to for years. We know what he is about, and I like it. I don’t think prior experience is as important as finding the right guy.
NoleJawn
Great, another Ex-Flyer. Awesome!
Lethal_Lunacy
Love Jonesy and Briere, but not thrilled with this being the direction the org chose to go. With that said, I hope this works out and hope they end up being the best we’ve ever had. Rooting for their success is all you can really do at this point.

Contrasting the front offices of the Phillies/Eagles and the Flyers is night and day.

I’ve said this before but I’m gonna post it here because I think we can use an injection of hope among another wave of former flyers hires.
Jones is honestly not a bad pick from a purely technical point.
The job of this teams PoHO is to run as a mediator between owners and the gm, and also handle a lot of the handshaking and behind the scenes stuff with Comcast and it’s partners. Jones’ rise through the ranks as a analyst, from our local guy to national and back again shows he knows how to rub elbows and make himself seen and heard. The guy has been a success in a very tough to succeed area (how many national announcers can you name that no one hates? Like no one at all?)
Hell also need to work with and criticize the gm, and he’s made zero qualms about telling hockey viewers how he feels on topics, and he has a very modern view of what hockey should be. I actively don’t hate this idea. Plus he’s a company man. Worked with Comcast forever. He’ll be able to pull resources from them, even if that was never our issue. Comcast trusts Jones to be honest, and I think it could work.
Considering exactly what the PoHO is going to do here, I don’t hate Jones for the job. Danny is the big question mark, but at least now that it’s settled the off-season moves can begin developing and well find out what we have. Im cautiously hopeful.

I’m gonna be optimistic and hope this will be the start of a new era and is what turns everything around for us…but I’ll still manage my expectations lmfao
Effective-Cut6398
So fucking stupid. This team will never hire real execs they think being a former player makes you qualified. We’re never winning a Cup again.
dylanrcoyle
I think the eggs fall into the basket of what kind of support and hockey mind Briere has. We know he’s an extremely smart person. He just got a business management degree at Penn’s Wharton School.
There’s a problem that’s twofold, in my opinion: The Old Boy’s Club – which honestly I don’t think really comes too much into play with these hires – and the same old story with the Flyers hiring former players. It’s never worked in the past. And it seems like the team’s messaging shows desperation to recapture fans who won’t like these hires at all instead of being unapologetic in saying “this is what this team is, and we’re going to fight it out from here.”
I think the soul of the front office left when Ed Snider died, even if the hiring practices have not changed.
I hope it’s a Stevie Y situation.
No hockey front office experience, but almost immediately after retiring becomes VP and Alternate Governor of the Red Wings. Four years later, he’s Tampa’s GM. We know how that turned out.
Presidentzerk
I haven’t been following the Flyers all to closely as of late, especially with the success of the other 3 teams, so to see Keith Jones be named team president all of a sudden is kinda surprising. Was this expected for you guys?
**Not complaining though. I love Jonesy

Color me SHOCKED that the Flyers would hire an alumni to take over.

I’m going to choose to be optimistic. We’ll see how the draft goes and what they do during the off-season. 24 hours in is far too early to give up.
Honestly, the biggest tragedy is breaking up the best broadcast team in the game in JJ and Jonesy.

Joke organization.

If only Florida was out – I think Pronger would’ve been a better choice if we were still going former players route.

I’m not gonna bitch for now. The former player schtick is overblown. Every organization that’s older then 20 years has former players in key positions. Sakic in COL, Brindy in CAR, Drury in NY, Yzerman in DET, Gurein when he was in PIT. Could go on forever and list like 6000 names. They shit canned Scott, Fletch and sidelined the ol boys. Idk if new management will be good or not but it’s not more of the same as of right now like everyone’s dooming on about. Just a hockey organization doing hockey organization things. Hopefully they all have sharp forward thinking minds about running the Flyers and put on a show for us. New execs with little experience succeed all the time in hockey. They also fail. We won’t know till we know. But it’s different for sure. And at minimum we all want a different direction. And new leadership has at least been vocal about wanting a different direction too.
