Shea Theodore spearing on Klim Kostin – Tough Call Suspension Recommendation

Shea Theodore was already let off the hook with a minor penalty for slashing instead of a match penalty for spearing. Under my system his luck would not continue.

  1. Playoffs make it different though… I’d say one game since he’s not a repeat offender (to my knowledge)

  2. Standard for the entire playoffs will be set with what the NHL sets here. Too bad they arent consistent or the players would know.

  3. Naw if you crosscheck a guy three times like that you have this coming. Players should be able to defend themselves without fear of suspension.

  4. My guess here: the refs saw the aftermath and not the original infraction. R2 was likely tracking the puck and scrum around it. R1 may have been doing the same. To call it a slash is the "safer" option in the ref's mind for this situation. "I saw the stick work in my peripheral vision; I can't say for certain if it was a spear. Since I want to be 100% certain for a 5' (and GM), let's call it a slash."

I agree; it's a spear. That stated, refs have a tough job. Hockey is a fast game and it's impossible to see everything.
