Matvei Michkov is a STEAL!

OK Guys, now that we know the Habs are drafting #5. It’s time to talk about one of the most controversial players that will be available in the first round. Matvei Michkov. Should the Habs take him if he is available at #5? I think so!

  1. Carlsson, michkov, fantilli and smith could all go first overall in most draft and have better stats than most legends in their respective leagues , who ever outta those 4 are available , the habs must take . Slafkovsky wouldn’t even go out top 15 in this years draft .

What if , just what if Bedard doesn’t turn out to be what he’s suppose to? Not sure Bedard will have a good start in Chicago

  2. Alexei Cheraponov is the only one I can think of that was hyped and never made it over.

His story is a sad one, but he was ranked in the same spot at Michkov. I don’t know if he would ever have made it over had he not died.

However, if Michkov is available at #5 you take him 100% of the time every time.

  3. If you pick Michkov you have to be prepared to wait for 3 years before he can come over.

  4. Michkov is a great player and I’d take him at 5 if he’s there but I don’t think he has that dog in him to win us a cup just like all those frauds on Toronto. (I hope I’m wrong)

  5. They can't go wrong with one of the top 5, I wouldn't be mad about Divorsky either. Just as long as they don't draft Poptart newfie-hoppkins we're good.

  6. Cold war, No international events allowed. Cannot leave the country maybe for years. The war will most likely end in a stalemate and we will have a new cold war.
How can he defect with no international events?
My dad and sister want to ban Russians from the NHL. Who knows where this ends.
I doubt Michkov is taken in the top 10.
This is not like any time in history. Even in the darkest days of the cold war Russians left the country to play hockey and had an opportunity to defect. That is no longer the case. Now they also have to worry about their fathers being killed at home in Russia if they piss off Putin.
You are going to be disappointed on draft day when we draft someone else.

  7. They will never draft Michlkov after the Mailloux drama, Québec is too woke for that a Russian player during the Ukraine war.. are you crazy 😂

  8. Michkov , Smith or Carlsson will be available on the fifth pick ..There is no work for HuGo to do other than say the name of the one left . Michkov is the secret weapon in waiting that will join the team in 3 years which will make him matured ..

  9. I recall Scotty Bowman was stuck picking at the 5 slot and had to take a flyer on an unknown from a Commie country ..Everybody laughed at Scotty but Jaumir Jagr turned out pretty well thank you …

  11. Wasn't Michkov's father murdered? Was that a message from the Russian government to Michkov that he better stay in Russia or no family member is safe? I think it would be irresponsible to Michkov if an NHL team drafts him and brings him over to North America.

  12. I'm happy that we didn't tank just for the first overall pick at least with the fifth pick we can hold it with pride the boys played well considering with all the injuries and it was basically an AHL team and a bunch of rookies!

  13. Yakupov is the first that comes to mind when you think 1st round no NHL (well he made it but he was a bust so depends how you wanna see it)

  14. So…. let me tell you what part of the equation you're missing; About a month and a half ago, Michkov's father was murdered. Let me say that again. Fucking murdered! Not sure if you're paying attention to this fact, but people are falling out of windows all the time in Russia these days. Putin isn't messing around. If Michkov has more family there that he needs to keep safe, then that's a big problem. Russia lost the last generational star they had to the NHL in Ovechkin and they are not going to let it happen again.

  15. Michkov is the smallest dude in the first round, and I dont want to wait 3 years! I WANT BEDARD!! 😭🤢🤮😭

  16. They did say they will take the best player available and if it is michkov he needs to put on the pounds n muscle hes smol 147lbs? I think, having him when hes 21 I think the habs will be competing for a playoff spot around that time hopefully before

  17. Ok so if I'm going down this rabbit hole , it goes like this , we aquire PLD , he slots in as 2c , dach moves up to wing on the top line , second line of slav, PLD , michkov

  18. I will shot blood if Michkov is there and we don’t take him. Dude is a freak. If Michkov is gone (I think Cbus or Sharks will for sure take him) then I want Will Smith 10000%

Not getting a lotto pick sucks, but we were most likely to pick at 6 than 5. There is definitely a drop off after the 5th pick. Draft lottery was still a win for us.

  19. I think it’s easy to take smith or carlsson at 5 if they are left. Michkov I was hesitant on but after thinking about it unless there is something in his game you don’t like you gotta take him if he’s the one from those 5 available. Plus the idea would be in 26/27 he’d be entering his prime of hopefully getting a point per game. We have the defensive guy, the scorer, and the big strength guy. Now let’s grab the creative guy. Hopefully kovalev and markov can sell him on Montreal to get him drooling at the mouth to come over here as well.

  20. No thanks of me. If a Russian does like how his situation is going, they leave and go back to play in Russia. Will Smith is my pick.

  21. The rules in Russia are about to change regarding russian prospects apparently. Michkov likeky won't be able to play in the NHL even after his first KHL contract is over. And his father was drowned in a pond too.
    https://youtu.be/b9LmFkA99uE

Montreal is aware of this change coming and won't draft him thankfully.

  22. If the habs are fine with him at 5 then you dont trade up. Unless they really want Smith or Carlsson trade up with San Jose

  23. It's a dangerous pick for sure. I wouldn't want my team taking him in the top 15 with the amount of quality players are available and the obvious need for help no not in 2027

  24. At 5, they have to pick the best player available. IF Mitchkov is available they have to pick him no matter what. It's a high risk high reward type of player…if for whatever reason Mitchkov doesn't end up playing in the NHL at least we can say that they still picked the best player available at the time of the draft. Not all picks end up working but you have to pick what you think is the best player available that's just how drafting works

  25. Michkov is a TOP 3 PICK!!! Columbus would be stupid not to pick him. The top 2 will get taken while Michkov should be 3rd.

  26. Michkov with a 4-year contract with a KHL team has becomed a big risk for an NHL team to draft him high. Because of the 3 year period to sign him after drafting him or loosing him afterward. A kind of blackmail situation for the KHL team having him presently. How much an NHL would be prepare to pay the KHL team to free Michkov of his contract???

  27. After the discovery of his father’s body and the news his death was related to his sons NHL career, one has to wonder how that may affect Michkov. This is how McGuire put it, translated from French: “Obviously, getting stories confirmed when it comes from Russia, you will understand that it is difficult. But it seems that his father was trying to have the contract invalidated and get Matvei sent to North America quickly. That’s why this story is going to be a bit ‘touchy’ because we don’t know if the young man is going to be forced to respect the contract he apparently signed because nobody can say clearly if he really signed this contract and if the length is 2 years, 3 years, 4 years that is on this contract.”
