Did Steve Yzerman’s Rebuild Take a Step Forward This Year? | What Is the Expectation Next Year?

Year 4 of Steve Yzerman’s rebuild is in the books. The team took a step forward on the ice and on the stat sheet. But was that step forward enough? In the grand scheme are we happy with the direction of the rebuild? And what should our expectation be for it in year 5? #lgrw

  1. No, it stayed put. With the top 5 of this years draft, Yzerman should have tanked. Now we are on the outside looking in and hoping to do the best we can at 9th. This was yzerman’s first inexcusable mistake in my eyes. You can’t really justify it to me. I do not think Raymond or Seider would have been ruined by one more dumpster year. What would have been more humiliating, tanking or getting absolutely humiliated out of playoff contention and selling core guys at the deadline? I’d almost say getting bullied by Ottawa was worse. You could see it on all of their faces. If you’re committing to a rebuild then fucking commit

  2. With all the signings of last off season totalling about 25 mil in cap space, and adding six more points in the standings from the prior season. You do the math. Meanwhile, Buffalo jumped 16 points.
Yzerman is just as human as the next GM.

  3. Rebuild went forward. Progress isn’t always substantial and even though are place in the division didn’t move. People tend to forget the Atlantic is a hellish landscape, and with the signings I disagree with the Chairot one still. But Perron, Kubalik and Copp were great signings. If we tanked this year like old heads and other people wanted then a higher percentage of the fan base would’ve been angry since we now know where bedard will go. And the Bert and Hronek trades had to happen since Bert was never gonna sign with us and why pass up on such a good deal for Hronek. And with a deep class like this Wings are still guaranteed to get a top tier player at 9. Although I wish we did better, 80 points and seeing players improve was nice

  4. Steve started to hit the gas one year too early… we would have got our #1 center this year.

We moved out horonek and Bert for assets we are gonna move for a top end forward.

Seems like a step forward for a step back to step sideways

  5. Still not understanding all the "we should have tanked" comments. The team has come too far to have a morale crushing season like that.

  6. “The last 12 months raised the floor. The next 12 months will raise the ceiling “ great quote Scotty that sums up Yzerman’s plan

  7. Draft choices aren’t assets until they make the starting lineup, til then they are future considerations. Yzerman works methodically like he did in Tampa. He got a generational goalie in 2012 and built wisely through the draft and free agents, he also had Stamkos and Hedmann. If you believe that he can replicate Tampa(highly unlikely) then I would expect legitimate contention by 28/29. This year I would give him a C(pass but needs to work harder) I am willing to wait until next season to evaluate the Vrana debacle. If Vrana proves to be a success then Yzerman’s grade gets lowered because Vrana would have been his Stamkos.
