What went wrong for the Oilers in do-or-die Game 6?
Jay Onrait was joined by TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button, who broke down what went wrong for the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6, and shared his assessment of the Oilers’ season as a whole.
RNH and Yami come to mind of not performing and the same thing happened last year. I think some serious consideration needs to be made to change up a couple players as it's not working. How many times has Yami been open only to fan on a McDavid pass
Nothing went wrong. This is exactly how it's supposed to be, dictated by emporer Bettman, he hates Canada so much. Why, are we refusing to realize that we lost our sport… And it's never, ever coming back
Skinner and the lack of scoring 5 on 5 is what lost the Oilers this series. Over the course of the playoffs they scored 40% of their goals on the power play. Can't rely on the PP to win you a cup, they don't call penalties in elimination games and we've known this for years.
Like every time it's the same thing. Not good enough goalies and defense. You can win playoff games with 2 goals and even with 1 goal, but it's really hard to win when you let in 5 goals.
Same thing that always goes wrong – relied too much on their big offence. Not a good plan in the playoffs. Sounds familiar if you live in Southern Ontario. Smart GMs know what they need in the playoffs.
Soft team with no killer instinct, too many bad contracts. Too much $ invested in the core and those bad contracts with not enough support. Time to blow it up and rebuild. You’ll never win with this team and Mcdavid is gonna leave anyway… Oh my bad, these problems only exist for the Toronto maple leafs. Apparently
The coaching and management stubbornness by not putting in Campbell possibly cost them game 5. 6 and the series. I know it's not all on Skinner but he did not have a good series.
Florida switched up their goalie with Brobovsky and they turned their first series around and also went on to win their second series. Yes, we were all on Campbell during the regular season but he hasn't had a chance in the playoffs except clean up minutes. If you go back even to his Leaf days he was the reason why the Leafs were even in some of those games.
DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE, Nobody covering Vegas players in front of the net..Nurse and Cece had a tough game….Defense has always been our achilles heel, ever since Connor was drafted…..If you put the Vegas defense on the Oilers, the Oilers would be unstoppable! I sure hope they improve it during the summer. Aside from Ekholm and Kulak, the rest need to be upgraded.
The Oilers haven't really had grade A goaltending since they had Cujo nor have they had a stud on defence since Pronger left them. And what happened to Draisaitl? In the last 3 games he was not a factor and prior to this he seemed unstoppable? Wondering if he was hurt? Also Darnell Nurse isn't worth what he's being paid….undisciplined and out of position too often. Also Yamamoto has no finish and is a liability in the D zone. Keep Ekholm and find another stud on D and replace guys like Yamamoto and RNH who seems to disappear when the pressure is on. Finding a better than average goalie has been the Oilers Achilles Heel for far too long now. Easier said than done and when you have McD and Draisaitl contracts it does limit you're options

Actually I just changed my mind right now. The moment they lost is when they realized they were a generation of snivviling man babies who cry about their last names and coming together as a community. No one every wins who is like that. Never has, never will.

What went wrong is they have McDaisy as their captain. He is a scumbag and will never lead a team to the cup . Selfish player and very overrated
they might have tried playing some defense
It became clear once you take the power play away from Edmonton, you could beat them.
Nothing went wrong the better team won. VGK where even down their starting goalie for most of the series.

Vegas clearly was the better team, they dig deep to come back from being down..
Oilers will probably make trades and tell us rebuild mode, will be ready a couple years..tired of it
