[Lysowski] Would the Sabres call about Connor Hellebuyck? Of course. Kevyn Adams always makes the call. Wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t. But it’s a Vezina-winning goalie entering the final season of his contract. Acquisition cost, combined with it’s a rental, make it highly unlikely

    I’d rather go after Saros.

2 years of Saros in tandem with Levi would be a dream come true. The perfect goalie for Levi to learn under with a contract that doesn’t block Levi from taking the number 1 job when he is ready.

Obviously, the value would have to make sense. But a tandem of Saros and Levi would be amazing for this squad.

No matter what goalie you put back there they are going to struggle. Defense is a mess after top 3 players.

I have faith in UPL, Levi, and Comrie with better defensive play from both forwards and D

Is UPL not a serviceable #2? Or we looking for a killer vet?

The Athletic had a different take:

Hellebuyck is one of the NHL’s few true No. 1, workhorse goaltenders. He won the Vezina in 2020 and is a finalist again. How much is he going to want on a long-term deal? Currently making $6.16 million, he could command $9 million-plus on the open market. Can the Jets stomach that?

If he becomes available, don’t be surprised if Buffalo and New Jersey take big swings.

One thing we’ve heard early this offseason is that the Sabres have interest in Hellebuyck, with the belief that a genuine No. 1 goaltender could be the last remaining piece in turning them into contenders. Getting one would also allow them to hold off on turning the reins over to Devon Levi until he’s proven to be NHL-ready.

Are we sure the acquisition cost will be prohibitively high? Winnipeg would be dependent on high demand, actual or perceived, in order to get a great price for a rental goaltender (Vezina winner or not). Outside of NJ and Buffalo, I don’t know who would be in the market that would have the desire or resources (cap space and tradeable assets) to make it work.

It’s probably better to leave roster players as it is letting the team grow and add a mid tier goalie like jarry or korpisalo in FA to split duties. Buffalo certainly is on upswing and playoffs in site but this is an all in type of move they don’t need yet.
