If he's already on a team that chokes in the playoffs why would he want to go to a team that doesn't even make the playoffs? One player won't change it even if it's Matthews. But Arizona surely has the cap space to get it done (because no big stars want to play for them). I'm not Austin Matthews, but I don't know if possibly killing your career by going to a bottom scraping team is worth it just to be closer to home. He has the money to fly home whenever he wants in the off-season anyway.

This man seems to think care about players going home. We will probably see a video in 5 years โwhy bedard will be going to canucksโ players donโt care about anything outside of getting paid and cups.
Matthews going home to Arizona will help them sell more tickets but may not bring them the Cup. Tavares was brought home from Long Island but the Leafs still don't have playoff success.
It was far more likely had the Yotes won the draft. On paper, they should have been the worst team in history this year. No arena, no roster, etc.. Unfortunately, they made the mistake of hiring an incredibly good coach a few years too soon and they played themselves out of their foregone destiny. With that said, brand new, state of the art arena, great coach, boatload of prospects, deep pockets and a contract offer that will dwarf anything in NHL history, and I'd say it's still a possibility.

i'm sure he's leaving. mainly because he has this fantasy of being the highest paid play in the league. dude, you disappeared in the playoffs! whoever's calling the shots in toronto is not going to give this guy 13-14 million AAV. arizona has some good pieces, trade him.
He would have even less success in Arizona. Theyโre one of the worst teams period and they will continue to be bottom-feeders for the foreseeable future. As a family man, it makes sense, but as an athlete, it makes a lot more sense to stay in Toronto. I think he stays.
