Oilers Remain Close and Yet So Far From Ultimate Goal

The Oilers put on a show this season when it came to the power play. Next season, they need to do the same five on five.

  1. Draisaitl is right. This year was a step back. A failure, really.
I think they’re close as well, but making the changes they need to make will be difficult.
Nurse is the dead weight contract. Not worth anywhere NEAR what he’s being paid. I wish he’d waive his NMC, so they could trade him.
Anyway, Defense, Goaltending and secondary scoring are the needs.
    Same as every other year.

  2. It could be how they organize the lines and coaching. Getting Ekholm helped, Bouchard's improvement is huge, can another D man step up to help them?

  3. Drai didn't show up for the elimination game. McJesus can't do it all himself…

  4. On his radio show today Bob Stauffer mentioned that Kane has been playing with a broken finger on opposite hand to the hand that was injured earlier in the year.

  5. I think it's very fair and totally not sarcastic to say that you cannot win with McDavid as your leader! Just impossible. Can't get over the hump. Time to tear it all down. (good vid tho as always THG)

  6. Ask Toronto. Ask Boston. Ask Colorado…goaltending takes you there…or takes you out. Oilers have been lacking solid tending for a long time!

  7. I usually don't love blaming one guy, but Skinner was a problem in the last two games. You simply cannot let in 2 total softies a game and expect to win it. In Game 6 Edmonton had 41 shots vs Vegas having 22, and 19 high quality scoring shots vs 9. Hill was simply straight up the better goalie, he slammed the door shut and Skinner opened the screen door. If Edmonton wants to have more success they're going to need a guy who can step up between the pipes when it matters.

  8. matthews going to arizona for sure-that will clear cap space to give conner the 20 mil per he will want-drysital going to get 15 mil per-he will look great in a sharks uniform….

  9. They were shit all year 5 on 5 and these playoffs proved that. Not shocked by them losing at all.

  10. Wasn't Elias Petterson almost better 5v5 than McDavid? That tells you the problem with the Oilers. That and goaltending.

  11. As Oilers fan its disappointing that they lost to Vegas but its growing pains to the ultimate goal I believe in them and they are that's close a true fan would stick with them I am. Gary Bettmen is not the problem that Canadian teams have not won the Cup in 30 years but I know OILERS are lets Go Oilers in 2024.

  12. they need a veteran presence who's won the cup to teach the rest of the Oilers how to play and win in the playoffs. not enough resilience and grit. it feels to me like the whole team is waiting for Connor and Leon to win the game for them instead of taking initiative on their own

  13. Your best defenseman cannot be Darnell Nurse at $9 million or whatever he's making.

  14. I am both okay with skinner getting the start and if they had started Campbell in game 6 instead. It was arguably time to shake things up. I am certain the starter job is/was always going to be back up for grabs next season so it would have made sense given the results to give Campbell a shot in game 6.

  15. In Franchise Hockey Manager, I don't have a problem paying elite D-Men 10 million, but I am talking about guys like McEvoy or Heiskenen, not Darnell Nurse. Nothing he had done prior to signing that deal showed he was a Dougie Hamilton or an elite D-man, but they started paying him like one. That was a huge mistake.

  16. Shit defense, shit goaltending. McDavid and Drai refuse to acknowledge that there's 2 ends of the rink. Oiler's will never win until they figure that out. Said it before the playoffs started when everyone and their dog was picking Edmonton out of the west. Completely baffling that anyone would have picked them.

  17. 2016-17, they lost in 7 (not 5) vs ANA. It was clearly due to missed calls (or non-calls) vs Cory Perry and Ryan Kesler who were allowed to hold and tackle Talbot. Otherwise they would have won.

  18. No goaltending and terrible defense I said it all year, please explain how nurse is 9.5 mil defensmen absolutely idiotic contract that is completely immovable. 5×5 for Campbell was no better they are introuble in coming years as I have always said oilers are the west leafs

  19. Keep Campbell. He looked good in the playoffs and could bounce back to retake the 1A position.
    Nurse contract is maddeningly ridiculous.

  20. Maurice went back to their experienced and expensive UFA signed goalie, and the now FLA is in the Conf Finals.

  21. The trade chips are Ceci and Yamamoto, they are expendable, Yamamoto gets owned by the opposition every playoffs, he is an eastern conference type player would probably be good there. Maybe he and Ceci could get us a big mean right shot D.

  22. It's the same problem every year – great offence , crappy defence and goal . Campbell is not the goalie they thought he was when they signed him to the big contract . I knew that was going to come back to bite them . He seemed to be starting to turn it around at the end but by this point he had already lost the confidence of the coach . Skinner will be a great goalie in the upcoming years but he's still very green . They did add some depth to the blue line but it still needs more work . This team has the same thought process as the 80's Oilers did . Concentrating on offence will win you some games but it's the defence that will win you series' .

  23. Edmonton needs reliable goaltending IMO. Smith gave them that last year. This year he was sorrily missed.

  24. Bad coaching, Campbell should of been in game 4 or 5 or 6.
Absolutely no reason to play him, as adequately explained by the "Hockey Guy"
5 million dollar goalie that played extremely well the 3 times they used him after Skinner (once again) choked 4 goals quickly.

  25. 3 rookies and 3 sophomores are in the regular roster so the lack of experience is showing. I wasn't really expect the team to do much but that end of the season run sort of created a bit of illusion. Woodcroft needs to manage the roster better because he surely has been doing a terrible job against Vegas. The Oilers have a bunch of right shot prospects and they need to gain more playing experiences (Hyman, Yamamoto, Derek Ryan, and Bjugstand are the only 4 right shots on active roster.)
The Oilers still have 2 more season left to show something before Draisaitl's contract is up.

  26. Edmonton has a lot to build on. The best power play. They know they need to improve their five-on-five play but knowing that is half the battle if they can get that figured out this off season next season has the chance to be very promising.

  27. I get the argument some make that McDavid's and Draisaitl's gaudy offensive numbers offset their subpar defensive metrics but they either need to find a few stud defensive players on the cheap or those two guys are going to need to up their defensive games, and there's no reason they couldn't, or shouldn't for that matter. They're obviously two of the more athletic players (or at least McDavid is with his skating) and they obviously each think the game at a high level so they should have excellent anticipation. There's absolutely no reason they couldn't both be above average defensive players. Good grief…McDavid could probably score 130 points and also be a Selke candidate if he put in the effort.

  28. I really believe I have psychic abilities. When Draisaitl was hot and it was an absurd to claim he wouldn’t score again. Well, he didn’t and I said he wouldn’t. Psychic.

  29. They need A LOT more from Nurse. Trade Yamamoto. Sign cheap depth forwards. May have to upgrade the coach to get a better 5v5 game.

  30. All Canadian Teams are…Bettman will not allow a Canadian Team to win a Cup and everyone knows it……If an Oiler did what that gutless Coward PieterAngelo did, the Oiler would be suspended for the playoffs, and everyone knows it…….The 1 game suspension was a disgusting slap in the face to Draisaitl, The Oilers, Edmonton and true Hockey fan's everywhere….The fact that the classless, disgrace PieterAngelo is still allowed to play further demonstrates what a BUSH LEAGUE 3 Ring Circus Bettman has dragged this league down to….It is revolting to watch. Bettman HAS to go.
THAT is the number one requirement for ALL Canadian teams….

Just wrap your head around the fact that a 2 HANDED OVERHEAD LUMBERJACK ATTACK occurred on one of the best players in the World ……..And the excuse from the Coward PietrAngelo?…"They were targeting me, I got frustrated."
REALLY? Targeted in the playoffs? WOW!!!

You don't suppose that Mcdavid or Draisaitl are ever targeted? Playoffs or otherwise?
Crosby? MacKinnon? Ovie? Ever targeted.? Do they get frustrated?
Have any of them acted like an out of control psychopath like PieterAngelo?
AND GARY BETTMEN'S NHL CONDONES IT WITH A 1 GAME SUSPENSION?

The league has spoken. They could not care less about the well being of certain players and their teams (ie Canadian)
I honestly will not be surprised if PieterAngelo gets Chopped across the throat next year.
    He deserves it……or worse.
And Bettman needs to be replaced. His reign of error is ruining our great game.

  31. If you outshoot the opposite team 2:1 and still lose. You can blame 5on5 play but lets be honest we know what the reason is

  32. Oilers showed these issues in Flames series last year, just had 20% of shots go in. Beat LA twice in close series, but same story every other series. Big changes should have started when they lost to CHI in playin round. Or next season when McJesus had 100 pts in half a season to only get swept by a depleted Jets team. Im sure the hype train will be right back to same ol' delusion next year for start of season but same issues will pursist. Hi flying team that will run top players into the ground by playoff time & have no team commitment to defense (& reward looping d coverage & blowing zone).

  33. Nhl needs to go to full 2 minutes on the power play. Why penalize a team with a great power play? Flip the rule. A short handed goal gets your guy out of the box and kills the penalty.
