Kyle Dubas talks future with Toronto Maple Leafs and how all options are on table with core

The Toronto Maple Leafs had their locker room cleanout day and there was a lot to take away from especially from general manager Kyle Dubas. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti give their general thoughts on what the day was like. They decided to focus on what Dubas had to say as he appeared to be more open about his thoughts on how the season went and his surprising comment about whether he expects to be back next season and the guys debate if he should be back. They also listen to Dubas’ comments on Sheldon Keefe’s future and whether he would be willing to trade a core player in the offseason.

  1. … what are the chances of Dubas Keefe Mathews being odd fellows?
Some one should investigate and find out for sure.

  2. This is already almost the middle of may. Marner and matthews contracts will have no trades kick in july first, the draft is late june, and there are offseason decisions like signings that still need to be considered. If dubas would be canned someone would need to be brought in ASAP to watch tapes on potential draft selections. If your firing a gm its unlikely youd want him to make your selections, youd want to give the picks to thw new gm.

All that being said, its unlikely dubas gets fired. He has built a really good team given the circumstances of the flat cap. Hes made some mistakes in mrazek and murray, but he was also able to manage that risk. Mrazek by trading down in draft picks, and murray can be sent to robidas island for ltir, or bought out, or unloaded for a year. Eith the sandin trade he managed to get a similar player thats slightly larger and firther along in gustafson, amd get bostons first, which we all thought would be late first but now it seems like 24th overall so not bad.

We can all agree the way the leafs looked this year was the best in all 7 years, so i dont think fault can be put on dubas. I guess really for handicapping the team with these large contracts in the first place that would be the only criticism . This comes down to execution, and if the leafs had all the tools but couldnt execute, maybe thats on the coach and players and of the gm. Some things need to change byt i dont think it should be kyle. Maybe marner, maybe nylander, although nylander seemed better suited for playoffs. Definitely keefe im tired of watching him get out coached by every other team. Its getting to be like the oh the leafs got goalied meme lol.

  3. Dubas was absolutely insufferable. Bringing up his family like he is the only one. Like give me a break. What a narcissistic douche.

  4. The widespread fan disdain and anger has now already begun . This is different. The reality of the fans feeling unimportant will increase methodically. It is clear that the players and management don't care what the fans think. Beware !

  5. Dubas playing the " victim " as in his family has been through a lot , was an insult to our intelligence.

  6. THis is on your commentary on Dubas and the "path shifting sightly". My interpretation of what he is saying is not that the players there can't get it done, but that he cant justify doing "nothing" any longer with the core of the team. There have to be consequences for failure. This guy is now a seasoned, savvy executive. There is no longer any excuse or rationale for running it back.

  7. Well, let’s watch Toronto media and the Toronto fans shit on the Toronto Maple Leafs players as usual even if they won the cup they would find fault that’s why Toronto the karma you’re not gonna win a cup I think you start treating these guys with some level of respect

  8. Choice 1 trade JT, Choice 2 Matthews to Ducks for 2nd overall, Drysdale, McTavish + top prospect (Zellweger, Mintyukov). Matthews to LA Byfield, Clarke, Turcotte, Iafallo, Choice 3 Nylander for gritty top 6 LW and top pairing D + top prospect. I would choose 1 and 3, but 2 and 3 would open a lot of cap, fill some needs and replenish the prospect pool. You can’t have two 11 mill centres, one must go!

  9. Keefe is the problem, its the coaches job to prepare and motivate…. Not coddle and baby …. And we have to trade away anyone who cannot take coaching seriously…. Nylander doesnt care … marner is a panzy …. Matthews cares more about money than winning.

  10. Their stock answers, zero accountability speaks to the culture and soul of this core. It has to change via trade.

I think we need to take a step back in order to move forward

  11. On why this past year would be "difficult" … ok, the place where you work will express no long term commitment to you and your family = no confidence. Every little ripple in the Leafs orbit is dissected and looked at as part of the potential collapse of Kyle Dubas in Toronto. His family is subjected to that every day if they bother to check the press. His kids get heckled by other kids whose parents likely think he should be fired. I mean, really …. is this that hard to figure out? He has everything on the line and not a lot of suppport from the organization he is working so hard for. It would be bad enough for him, but his family gets subjected to all of this. There is no way to keep that pressure out of his family home. At this stage, folks, dont talk to me about how much money he's making … it becomes irrelevant.

I really like Kyle as a person. I also respect him completely as an executive. I think I totally get his comment.

  12. They should remove Shannon make dubas president and promote pridham to gm before another team takes him from the organization

  13. Wish this team would get pissed off and play with some freaking heart out there show some damm anger out there with all the failing

  14. That no Canadian team will win a Stanley Cup this season is kinda sad although there may be Canadian players who get Cup rings. Among the conference finalists, Canadian players can be found, with:
    – d-man Ekblad and centre Verhaeghe of the Panthers
    – centre Jordan Staal of the Canes
    – winger Stone of the Golden Knights
    – winger Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars

  15. This team shows no accountability, they were like – we tried our best so what do you want from us. The country club culture starts at the top and filters down. I'm not convinced Matthews is resigning here, he gave a stock answer. If he doesn't commit he needs to be moved before his no trade kicks in. He can say he wants to stay and then on July 1st can say he's changed his mind and the Leafs can't move him, same goes for Marner. Dubas has won 1 round in the 5yrs he's been GM yet so many people are worried he's leaving..lol

  16. Dubas Has to go. He’s had plenty of time to realize what’s needed in the Playoffs, but he figured high skilled Smurfs were the way to go, BUT he wasted 2 years realizing that it’s Not the way to go. The remaining playoff teams have one thing in common and that’s great defence. In all of Dubas’s time as GM he never once tried to get a Top D man. He could have in the Fall of 2018 But he didn’t pull the trigger on a trade. The Leafs D were the 2nd worst team in the NHL for turnovers in their own end. One more thing, Dubas traded Mason Marchment for Smurf Dennis “Don’t Call Me Gino” Malgin. Now Marchment is still playing and who knows where Malgin is.

  17. They should be doing everything and anything to move JT not personal just business
