Well deserved. Even when we weren’t winning the analytics guys were onto the good play coming out of this team. So happy to see the turnaround and the players developing well under him.
I don’t know, man.
On one hand, we have the best regular season in team history and our first playoff series win since 2012. Most of our young players have developed well with him as head coach. I was strongly against hiring him back in 2020, but it’s hard to argue against this year’s results.
On the other hand, we have an endless series of bad coaching decisions like playing Meier out of position, starting Vanecek in Game 4 against Carolina, his nonstop line blender, trying to change our style of play to rely on physicality when the playoffs started, not being adequately prepared for the playoffs with consistent lines, frustrating lineup choices, and giving too much ice time to the fourth line, as well as continuous systemic problems in the form of an underperforming powerplay and a team that constantly had to come from behind to win games (and playoff series) because they weren’t ready in the first period.
I guess my concern is that his process seems to be rife with errors, but the results are often good. Is this sustainable? Or, put differently, is he achieving optimal results with the roster he has? Is he doing a good job as coach, or is he being carried by the immense talent of guys like Hughes, Hischier, and Hamilton?
If Ruff didn’t make these mistakes, he would be an excellent coach. But he’s 63 now and has coached the fifth-most games in league history… he’s not going to change. If we make the same mistakes next season, we’re not going to get much further than we did this year.

This seems to be an interesting commentary on what they think of Brunette. I feel like they had the perfect opportunity to segway to a younger coach who had a chance to familiarize himself with the team first. It’s also interesting that I feel like I haven’t heard his name in any coaching searches.
I think we need to make sure his staff stays the same too
