After a failed vote in Tempe, is there still a path forward for the Coyotes in Arizona?

Arizona Coyotes fans were left stunned Tuesday night after Tempe citizens voted against propositions 301, 302 and 303. The future of the team now hangs in the balance with a viable permanent home in Tempe officially off the table. Is there a path forward for the Coyotes in Arizona or is relocation the only solution? How did things go wrong?

Craig, Petey and Leah sort through the emotions of it all on today’s PHNX Coyotes Podcast.

  1. When you see all those arrogant pr*cks calling themselves journos in traditional big markets like Toronto or Edmonton, and then you look at this group who just want to enjoy covering the usual hockey stuff but are unable to bc of all this sh*t… Life is not fair.

  2. This makes me sick. My son’s first exposure to hockey was with the Coyotes. First live games for him were Coyotes games. This one feels like the biggest sledgehammer of them all, even worse than the ownership bankruptcy with Trader Jerry and Glendale ending the lease early. At least there, I felt like the team had time and hope. I honestly feel, unless they get into bed with Mat Ishiba or the tribes, it’s over.

  3. I really hope they can work this out, i was the kid during the city council meetings in glendale who changed phil liebermans mind, im praying we can figure it out!

  4. Not a Coyotes fan but I’d rather see them stay in AZ then move to Houston. That would be another Atlanta Thrashers fiasco. IMHO, they would absolutely be successful in Salt Lake City, however if they don’t move there, than make it work in AZ. Cause I personally don’t see an NHL hockey team working anywhere else. If it didn’t work in Quebec, how the heck would it work in Houston? I hope something comes up that keeps them in AZ…if not, SLC will welcome them with open arms.

  5. If you think about it, there really isn't much benefit to someone 65+ in having an entertainment district in town so it's not surprising that they would vote no. But when you have such a miserable turnout from the under 35 crowd who would have benefited that's a sign that the team's campaign was poorly planned and/or poorly executed.

  6. Much love to the wonderful trio here who work their assess off for grade A Yotes coverage. May the Coyotes find a way to stay in Arizona FOREVER

  7. What about the madhouse on McDowell? The Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Could a new arena be built there? It has a lot of fire safety violations right now and I still believe that could be a possibility for an arena for the Coyotes.

  8. You all did a Hr for hockey in Arizona, Look at Sun devil hockey is a huge work, I really hope this team can stay !!!

  9. Really want a hockey team in Houston. Dont want it to be at the expense of Arizona hockey fans. But still really want hockey growth in my hometown.

  10. I hope they find new home location in Arizona in the future 🙏🙏🏋️‍♂️🙏💯💯💯🌵👍😎🏋️‍♂️🏌️‍♀️🏃‍♂️⛳️🦾🏒🏆🇺🇸🛬🌴

  11. They didnt spend enough because they felt it was a slam dunk win-win and it would be a definite Yes vote.

  12. I keep thinking about the kids and the hockey programs in AZ that have grown and benefited from the Coyotes. These kids don't deserve this shit. Nor do all the employees and families that rely on this organization.

  13. I live in NJ i used to have to hear about the devils moving all the time before they got their new arena and how our fans never showed up but we kids who grew up during the cup years are adults now with spending power and we show up and spend now. I don’t want to see Arizona move I’ve always rooted for them from afar because i know in my heart if they can just get their arena and have some success the team would work.

  14. Move the team I am so sick of Phoenix as a whole not wanting the coyotes. Tucson supports the roadrunners better.

  15. The trolls who have no clue how many committed yotes fans here in the valley and they have no clue how amazing this proposition was to build a stadium in Tempe. Shame on the idiot voters in that city. I hope the coyotes find a way to permanently stay and ban those “no” voters to ever enter that new stadium.

  16. Tempe First “If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.”

  17. I am an avid Coyotes fan and I have to say I am totally embarrassed. We are laughed at by everybody around the NHL. The fact that the people in Tempe are more inclined to keep a toxic waste site goes to show you there are plenty of hicks that live there. This state DESERVES to lose this team. The fact Gary Bettman last night did not include a committment to remain in AZ speaks volumes.. The local gov't reject them, Robert Sarver rejected them, Glendale said good bye, Tempe slapped them down, the local sports media doesn't pay attention to them like they should….WHEN DOES THIS ALL END? I say with tears in my eyes, Coyotes leave, go where you are appreciated. You have been treated like a bastard child in the PHX market.

  18. Would not surprise me if money from Canada, funded a lot of this misinformation. There are people in Canada who can not deal with losing their team years ago, especially people around Quebec.

  19. This show today helped bring a little bit of calm to the feelings. But I don’t know, I don’t know that I can hold out hope until they prove otherwise. It’s destructive to the mental health at this point. What I do want to say is how much I appreciate the 3 of you. Craig, your reporting and honesty and INTEGRITY or unbelievably appreciated. Petey, your humor is second to none and I can always count on you for a laugh. Leah, I feel like you’ve given the everyday fan much more of a voice by being the lead of this show. I genuinely appreciate you three and I genuinely appreciate and love this community we have worked hard to build. Because of you all, I and the rest of us didn’t have to go through that news alone. We had a place to come to where we can just feel and express our emotions in a safe space and I have so much gratitude for that. I think this is what I want to focus on right now more than anything else, is my love and appreciation for this community because hockey and the Coyotes don’t mean a whole lot without what we have here. I really do hope ownership figures this out and that we get to a point where this is truly over and we can stay for good. For now, I can’t hold out hope that this happens because it’s far too heartbreaking otherwise. But I absolutely appreciate you all and I love you all. Thank you for what you do.

  20. Wait……. WAIT! Just a DAMN MINUTE!!!! Winning an election is the only thing that matters? Kinda like the 2020 election. Now we're governed by a senile idiot.. Playing dirty? Your in the media, don't you think you owe it to yourselves to discuss the facts on the platforms that are offered to you. Coyotes OWNERSHIP IS TO BLAME!!!

  21. Cry about it more. GTFO out if Tempe and stay out you privileged little children. You lost bigly.

  22. big economic loss for the city of Tempe; property values always rise when billions are invested in a specific geographic area: area would have generated jobs, sales tax from businesses/restaurants/etc. as well as risen the value of surrounding commercial and residential properties … so all those who voted "NO"… dont understand basic economics… …. look at LA Live, Downtown San Diego Gas Lamp District and what happened to those areas… you think an investor or entity is going to spend $$$$ to clean the landfill without generating a strong return: it was the only way to privately clean up that area…. now Tempe will keep its landfill and it will stay a landfill … congrats Tempe!!! dont kid yourself on making that area a park or low income housing…. and if so it will certainly be on Tempe's dime… and BTW another city will get the team that understands that successful sports teams bring success to their surrounding communities… LOSS, LOSS on so many levels.

  23. Hey finally some self-reflection on this podcast, only person to blame is yourselves and Alex Muerelo

  24. I know I coyotes organization look new arena options in Arizona in the future for next three weeks right now 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💯💯💯💯👍🌵😎🌴

  25. Wrong. Taxes on residents would go up if these propositions passed. The Coyotes Entertainment District was going to receive a 30 year tax abatement on the back end. So, for all the surrounding infrastructure that requires up-keep, especially from the heavy use given the density of the site, who would pay for all that over the next three decades? Not Meruelo.

  26. I am so crushed by the absolute shortsighted tempe voters, but two spots wonder if could work – the mile square Salt River Rez land NW of 101/202 and could do arena, entertainment center, apt complex and the tribe could build another Talking Sticks hotel/casino/resort (replacing AZ Casino) or AZ Mills it is a dead mall and ripe for a metrocenter/fiesta redo (but also feel eff off tempe).
