TampaJayLightning, father of no former NHL players, also calls for an end to sports betting ads

Wait there’s a third Subban? Am I fucking high? I know PK and Malcolm.

Damn there’s a younger brother Jordan had to look that up. Love the Subbans though and pops is right.

Sports betting is not immoral… promoting sports betting to children is immoral.

  3. FancyWizardPants

Nothing against betting or even an ad or two but it’s gotten ridiculous. Commentators shouldn’t be sponsoring and promoting parlays and prop bets in the middle of the pregame show. Much like alcohol, nicotine, drugs or whatever, if your an adult do as you please but we shouldn’t be normalizing it to children.

  4. lethargicshtbag

I bet nothing changes. Okay, I will see myself out now.

  5. WhenTheFunStops89

Yes I agree with him. Gambling should only be available in the Great State of Nevada!

  6. Interrupting-cow_Moo

I support 100%. End drug ads, end liquor ads and political ads while we’re at it.

  7. ThrowAwayCanadaFin22

Totally agree. It’s become just ridiculous, instead of stats on pre game they are showing betting odds. Commercials are non stop, endorsements never ending.

  8. Ramulus14

I miss the days when it was just trucks and beer, and the boards didn’t move, and cabbie wasn’t a totally sell out.

  9. Definitelynotcal1gul

The NHL doesn’t know how to market shit so they need betting companies to do it for them. This won’t change.

  10. calvee123

I totally agree.., I hit mute every betting commercial that comes on… I hate this…

  11. patrickjpatten

Patrickjpatten, father of 3 girls who aren’t in the NHL, please end these ads. Please get ESPN off this crack.

  12. Grossepotatoe

I understand the NHL won’t ban these ads because of sponsorship deals but the gov needs to step in and regulate the amount of gambling ads allowed in a broadcast. And there’s no way the announcers should be talking odds and parlays and props etc, it’s just tacky

  13. GoRangers5

Gambling ads should be treated like tobacco ads.

  14. jessejames182

They have to. You’re already seeing people try to fix college games. I feel like you’re going to end up with A) some guy leveraging his life savings on some game and it’ll be a big news story about how he saw ads every 5 minutes for gambling for a year, and/or B) eventually some player/coach is going to try and fix a game.

  15. wickedweather

The sports betting ads are one thing, but what really grinds my gears, on Hockey Night in Canada, and Sportsnet (in Canada) before the game and in between periods have segments dedicated to betting, with their odds and over/unders and all that.

  16. JFoxxification

The sports betting ads tied into regular radio/broadcast segments is getting so exhausting. I can’t even listen to sports talk radio anymore.

  17. wankonobie

Bless this man. We are all sick of it

  18. IandouglasB

Why would ANYONE bet on the NHL??? Watch a team thru the reg season only to have the playoff REFS toss a coin or follow a script or whatever is going on with the officiating. I carefully examine the odds, look at the spread, do some other poking around in the stats and place a bet in the regular season. But playoffs? NO WAY! You cannot use stats to predict the outcome because of game management by the refs.

  19. TheRitalinCommando

They annoy the shit out of me and I’d like to see them gone too, but if it’s legal I don’t see what is to be done.

  20. Here in Canada it’s so bad they run Cabbie in between periods to give the best odds for live betting. It’s shameless

  21. Sharpy74

Expecting people who exploit addicts for a living to get some perspective is either adorable or totally naive.

  22. Seriously! It’s getting aggressive and predatory. Hopefully more people with some sway jump in the ring.

  23. blondechinesehair

Does he get more votes or something since he put 3 sons in the league?

  24. ThisIsFineImFine89

it’s so oversaturated its exhausting. Just stfu already and talk about the game

  25. Blueishgreeny

It’s be alright if it wasn’t the only ad being shown. I hate Jesse pink man now thanks

  26. GeneralDisarray65

I mean, it’s been getting ridiculous for a while now. It’s clearly and shamefully, just all about pushing this shit every second they can. A lot of people aren’t even watching sports anymore for the sake of enjoying it, but rather to track their bets. They aren’t rooting for their teams, rather just who they have money on. It’s become so soulless and boring.

  27. FellSorcerer

With respect: no. Unless you’re willing to ban all alcohol ads, walk away from this hill. It would be complete hypocrisy to ban gambling ads but keep alcohol ads.

  28. kid_drew

I agree with him, but let’s be honest: Jordan was never an NHL player

  29. Sports leagues/media are gonna create a generation of gambling addicts because they’re cramming gambling down our damn throats 24/7. I hope there’s a massive lawsuit in the future over it lol just totally ridiculous, gambling addiction can be a life ruining disease and (just like alcohol/nicotine) our society is gleefully promoting it because $

In a moral world, gambling/alcohol/nicotine/political ads are banned in the sports world… but never will happen because again, $$$

  30. CouldntThinkOfJuan

Every time I see one of the ads I think the same thing. Gambling being openly shoved down people’s throats is unethical.

  31. Electric1000000

Bro lost his bag. I’m kidding. I listened to 2 minutes, he doesn’t have any insanely passionate statements, just saying he’s worried about young people, the temptation of gambling (which is an addiction) is shown before/during/after the game, and wants to treat it like we treat alcohol/nicotine advertisements. He was asked if the lottery is any different, he said yes because it’s not as “in your face” as these gambling ads are. Basically, the temptation is *ALWAYS* there
