Most underrated/forgotten batsman of the 1990's? Averaged 43 in tests in an era of great bowling attacks, along with being a top quality keeper. Very solid ODI player as well.
David Houghton arguably The Best Ever Batsman from Zimbabwe alongside Andy Flower, but I think D-Houghton is superior than Andy Flower because Flower never dominated The Bowlers as Houghton did. First ever Wicket keeper Batsman of ODI History who hit 6 sixes in an innings during his one of the best knocks of World Cup History (142 vs New Zealand, 1987). Great player of spin but also brilliant against pace. Still holding The Highest score (266 vs Sri Lanka, 1994) in an innings from Zembabwe.
This is the Series where Dave Houghton scored back to back 50's against South Africa. This one I believe he was 56 not out and the next game he was out for 58. This was his last year a senior player for Zimbabwe. I believe he was 40 years old when he retired.
this man's batting has a bit of mark Waugh, Daryll cullinun, Grame Hick and Alec Stewart as well ,,, such an effortless strokeplay @40 is something special ,,, nowadays what we see is more of power hitting ,,, but this is pure timing and class ,,, those cover drives of Bryson
It's quite unfortunate that David Houghton didn't get many opportunities at the highest level. He remains quite possibly the best all-round batsman produced by Zimbabwe to this day, i don't think even Andy Flower had been as talented as this guy at his peak. He would have quite possibly gone down as one of the greats of the game had he got the chances/opportunities he truly deserved….
