  1. He was a great GM in the sense that he improved overtime, cared about everyone in the organization, and helped keep the Leafs competitive despite the pandemic disrupting things. Having said that, the bottom line is his teams did not win in the playoffs and it's time for a different perspective

  2. Dubas also gave up on Barabonov after a dozen games as a rookie, shipped him for nothing, and he turned out to be a quality NHL player these leaf teams coulda used.

  3. Wait wait wait. we have a 28th instead of a 25th "it's not a bad tradeoff?" no no no. we LOST a TOP young defenceman who can quarterback an nhl PP, we didn't win and ROR will leave. that's a MASSIVE loss.

  4. You can't talk about dubas' tenure without mentioning the following.
    Kadri trade.
Gives away a first round pick to dump Marleau (which he wouldn't have had to do had he not signed JT)
Muzzin – Durzi – Grundstrum and a first.
    Brown traded away
    Freddy let go.
    Hyman let go.
Traded Moore away for Campbell (who was weak vs TB and left)
Lets Curtis Mckelleini go, trusting Garret Sparks (ya…. Curtis won a cup)
Signs Barabanov then trades him to SJ for Sumoela who does nothing (Barabanov had 39pts)
Holl protected over Jared Mcann (40 goals @ 5 mil cap hit) (Holl was terrible for us)
Amirov, a lanky center, drafted over Schneider (6ft 3 209lb RHD) and Ghule. WHY?
Marchment for Malgin (2nd line left winger in a conference final over a soft dud) (this was recent btw)

    His best moves were
    Spezza
    Gio
    Kapanen
    and signing Bunting, maybe.

In the meantime, Lou gets NYI to TWO conference finals.

Tor did well in the regular season because the core 5 like playing shinny. Those players, but for JT, were all here BEFORE Dubas took over. He's just shuffled the deck but not gotten any different results.

  5. Kyle Dubas was hired very young, 9 years later, 5 years of GM, he overpaid the top players, was signing Tavares a mistake when you already had Kadri to be the #2 center? Giving Tavares the captaincy instead of Matthews, did Matthews get over that? Rielly? Team won a ton of games with players other guys drafted, but they won a ton of games. No playoff wins, maybe relied on advanced stats too much. As with most young guys other teams will want him soon, and he'll be more seasoned.

  6. Ottawa switching GM from Pierre Dorion to Dubas would be the stupidest thing they could do. Hmm. . have to keep an eye on this.

  7. And I've said for years, draft and draft, you can build a team through the draft like Colorado did, trading away draft picks kills me. Plus, he's out of contract so can do whatever he can do, if Pittsburgh or whoever wants him, Calgary, they can sign him and Toronto gets no compensation.

  8. This is a long time coming. Toronto’s problem has been the coaching! There is no way a team this good chokes like this on multiple runs with a good coach. Keefe should’ve been let go after that brutal Montreal loss.

  9. It's kind of funny to look back before the playoffs when most of Leafs Nation was saying that as long as they make it past the first round they will be happy…. That Florida series pretty much blew up this organization. I wonder if it would have been different had they played a bit better and lost in 6/7 in a competitive series, rather than going down 3-0 immediately.

  10. The Hockey Guy uploading a video just as relevant news breaks is actually neither a trope nor a meme.

  11. He should've been fired a few years ago. However his performance in the past year or two has me puzzled as to why they let him walk.

  12. As a guy who doesn’t like the Leafs and makes fun of them often. This was honestly a bad move by Toronto Dubas was a good GM made some bad moves but every GM makes bad moves

  13. I have a suspicion that Kyle's agent was out kicking tires around the league and has another offer waiting in the wings and that gave him the leverage to present Shanny with an over the top offer…if this isn't the case, Kyle really needs to fire his agent.

  14. I'm not sure what GMs actually do. Couches lead the one-ice plays, Owners own the Team, and (I assume) don't do much besides control finances. Do GMs make changes to the franchise, like trading players and determining lottery picks? Every time I saw Dubas up there in the box, he just seemed like an angry guy in a box. Also, who is the president? Who determines who the GM is? The owner? Is there a board of members?

  15. I have a suspicion that Kyle's agent was out kicking tires around the league and has another offer waiting in the wings and that gave him the leverage to present Shanny with an over the top offer…if this isn't the case, Kyle really needs to fire his agent.

  16. Appreciate your perspective but I think you were a bit too kind with Kyle.

Frankly, the story of Dubas comes down to 2 words “inexperience and overconfidence”. And given this it’s not all on him. Shanny possesses the same traits but I think in the last week he finally earned some experience as an NHL executive.

1- mistake one for Shanny was believing that when Kyle was an assistant GM that he wasn’t worth losing when other teams asked about talking to Kyle. Shanny panicked and likely made a rash rushed decision to name him the GM. He totally forgot about the tasks ahead with contracts and the need to fill key rolls
2- Shanny then bought the idea of making a big splash from Kyle to sign Taveres. Forgetting that they had 3 key core round contracts to sign and what this would mean for Kadri
3- he then let Kadri go for nothing losing key grit because as Kyle put it, we want to be speed and skill
4- he then got hosed on Nylander, mathews and Marner not just in terms of $$ but especially term
5- one of the worst moves Dubas was allowed to do in my view was firing Babcock and bringing in his own guy Keefe. Again, there is a theme, replace experience in favor of inexperience. Personally I think Dubas shafted Babs, leaking that silly he treated Marner badly crap for asking him to rate the players. Gimmie a break, this happens in sports. Dubas didn’t like Babs because Babs told him you can’t win with the model you have in mind. Funny thing though, Babs continues to be paid and Dubas is out. Plus, the run down Shanny did today on Dubas was one for Babs
6- we all know the bad trades, cheap rentals at the deadline, minimum pay old timers for unproductive role spots, etc etc just to work within Dubas salary speed and skill model that failed year after year
7- Dubas shows his inexperience every game and is good tv because he can’t control himself. You may think that’s a good thing to be emotional, but he just looks immature to me
8- his end of season press conference to me was the kicker. He didn’t apologize to the fans for another failure. See Boston and Edmonton for how it’s done. Instead he whined about the job being tough on his family. I get it, every big job is tough on our families, especially one so public, but that’s the role he signed in to take on. Using his family as cover was just weak and showed inexperience. Clearly it had an impact on aShanny but likely the Board as well.
9- then if Shanny account today is correct, his total immature handling on his contract renewal showed more inexperience. I’m thinking about it, I have to talk to my family, I’m in, I want more, etc etc. he literally thinks he’s a golden boy and he finally got a dose of reality that he should of gotten after losing the Montreal series.

I’m glad he’s gone and think that his legacy will go down with the other Leaf turd GMs like Fergie, Burke, etc. think about what is ahead for the team

    – 11 roster spots are free agents
    – we only have $15 million in cap space
    – we have to sign mathews and Nylander before July1st or risk all the crap talk next season (let alone losing them)
    – outside of Knies, the prospect pool is bare
    – we hardly have any draft picks
    – goal tending is still an issue
    – the blue line is one year older
    – fans are even more discouraged
    – their division is getting tougher with Buffalo, ottawa and Detroit coming on
    – Tavares has lost a step and the only way you can deal him will be to eat salary (like $4 or $5 million of his $11 million)
    – were going to have a new GM so that means new coaching drama
    – and worst of all, this team still has no identity and frankly never did under Dubas So if the focus changes to playing a more physical playoff style, can you see the core 4 buying in when they’ve had 5+ years of playoff opportunities to do so? I don’t think so

It’s like the line near the end of the movie Casino “this was the last time that something so valuable was given to inexperienced guys to run again”.

I bleed blue, but I soured once boy wonder was allowed to fire Babs and ruin his reputation. A rep that yeah was hard, but that’s what it takes to win cups and manage team Canada to back to back Olympic golds against the worlds best. Shanny blew it.

I wish Kyle well but he better get more humble and logical going forward because (frankly) he had his ass handed to him for 5 years with his unproven beliefs and pandering ways. I’m betting his old lady lectured him as well “don’t use me as your excuse cause now it’s cost you and our family a job and maybe our future”.

  17. He overpaid for players. And made some awful trades. Did he get the results they wanted? No. Was he awful? Not really. But does deserve a shot at another team as GM.

  18. RE:Sandin trade, I'm going on nothing but gut feeling but I think Dubas was working on another deal where he needed the 1st to make it happen and then it fell through. It might have been a winger but I (again gut) think he was gunna do a deal for Korpisalo. I know Dubas has been after him for time even longer then he swooned over Acchari. Dubas spoke to him in Free Agency before he choose FLA.

  19. I don't think this is going to change things for the Leafs. Dubas was so emotionally involved in the team, how can he be blamed for their failure to advance? Does any hockey fan think Toronto has a weak roster??? They have everything except the will to win in the playoffs. One commenter said it well: the Leafs played regular season hockey in the playoffs. Is that the fault of the GM? So many fans and analysts were sure that if the Leafs got by the first round, they would get over the negative vibe and just get better from that point on. One analyst said that he expected the Leafs to blow out the Panthers in Game 1, and to be honest, I thought he was right. But the Leafs effort was so incredibly weak, that i got off the bandwagon at that point. I was surprised that they managed to win 1 game against Florida, because after that first game blowout they were dead men walking. The only solution is to get different players, but I'd hate to see former Leafs players suddenly get to the Finals after leaving…

  20. First thing the new GM should do is Trade Marner for a defender

  21. Who hired Dufus? And from everything you've said he was incompetent. Shanahan should fire himself and the Leafs should become a private entity.

  22. thought Dubas brought together the help the leaf's needed to make a great push as a blue jackets fan got to have secondary teams love watching the leaf's and will next year also big four didn't deliver enough but seriously how often does this work out Toronto fans should be grateful they have a great team delivering a lot of wins very exciting

  23. The Leafs may put Hayley Wickenheiser as GM or Assistant GM,. League seems insisted to place women in the NHL.. more viewers more money.

  24. IMO, it's another exemple of why Canadian teams haven't won the Stanley cup in 30 years, fire a brillant GM but keep the useless muppet Shanahan. Did anyone watch All or nothing? lmao

  25. The easy fix is to move anyone that wants to go and rebuild with what is left. There are some high value assets here and within 2-3 years this team could be young and competitive again. It sucks for Toronto fans for a few more years but again, there's enough value here it could be as quick as 2-3 years before you're competing again
