The sheer amount of dirty in the game today is getting way out of control. Playoffs are so bad. Back in the day it was rougher, but you never played dirty, because there was such a thing as enforcers who would make you regret it. Pietrangelo would never have even tried that slash on Draistl or anything like it because the Oilers would have sent out a goon to put him in the hospital. Hockey was so much better when policed on its own, nowadays the refs and DoPS dont do shit and you have shit like this running rampant.
I have a son who plays minor hockey. If I ever saw my son do what Veleno did, my son would never forget what I’d have to say to him about it!
I mean fights could also restrain players from doing stuff like this, but so would 15-20 Match game misconduct.
In cases like this very dangerous play where intent is 100% to injure neglecting that it can cost a player his career, should be punished with absolute shitton of games.
Remove these people for good, suspension for life! This is not a sportsmanship, this is a vicious, deliberate wrong doing! What a cunt move!😮

Canadians do this everytime when they are playing equal opponents. Dirty hidden fouls, hidden cross-check, provoking opponents, small slash to goalkeeper after the game is stopped… I saw it many many times even on younger player championship. I don't know if they learn them this at camps or something but it's really ugly. Don't get me wrong I really like Canadian style of hockey. But these "psychological" things are just ugly.
I challenge your take that fighting solves these plays. They still happen, even with fighting…it’s not a deterrent. Half the fights you can barely get clean shots on a guy, and it leads to more physical play. And most of the guys doing the cheap shots will try to avoid the fight or get jumped and turtle.
Also, some coaches and players will risk a beating or even welcome a fight to their bottom 6 If they can make a cheap play on a better player.
Just my thoughts.

You don't need fighting to police the players. That's what the refs are for (whether they do their job right is another discussion). Give a 10-minute misconduct penalty, kick him out of the game, suspend him, fine him heavily (like at least a few months' wages), and possibly ban him. I don't get this reverence hockey has for fighting.

No you don’t need fighting to police the game. Such a primitive mindset reminds me of Durkheim, on how people from a rural traditional society moves to a city of and can’t process what they are seeing due to the contrast and therefore thinks criminality is acceptable. We have social control. Dude will be haunted by this for life. Speaking of which, yeah cancel culture is at times good! That serves a much stronger societal purpose. If this is how North Americans act without fighting (or guns) to police, it points to that you have a bigger deeper social problem in the foundation of your society.

As a Red Wings fan, I can definitely say I am repulsed by that move. Unbelievably dirty. However, considering all the padding they wear in that area, I wouldn't exacly call that "intent to injure". Regardless, the act is extremely disappointing and disturbing.
Dirtiest play for me would be the Bertuzzi-Moore incident.

Also.. I disagree that fighting is needed. Look at every other team sport where fighting is not a thing… it’s not exactly like people are going out of their way to break each other’s arms. This is an isolated event.

As for people saying, "I'm Canadian, and I'm glad Switzerland won." That's just as stupid. You can't blame the whole team and then hope the entire country suffers because of the actions of one idiot.
