Friedman, on 32 Thoughts, reported that a current Maple Leafs player texted him to say that “nobody is really sure” about what’s going to happen with Matthews now that Dubas is gone

I mean Toronto has alot more to offer outside of dubas. I think its getting a bit dramatic lol.

  2. VicVinegar88

So they don’t know if it’s good or bad, and we also don’t know if he was going to sign if Dubas was here.

  3. Skiffy10

i mean that’s pretty well known already. If shanny and the new GM are ruthless they’ll trade him if they can’t find an agreement instead of losing him for nothing. Matthews also might want something insane like $15 mill a year and little term which would help the idea of trading him too.

  4. MelanzanaFritta

I think Friedman also said that, even if Dubas had stayed, the player indicated he wasn’t sure if Matthews would have signed on July 1.

  5. LeafsChick

That’s not what he said. It was “they weren’t even sure if Matthews would have signed by July 1st with Dubas. Cause if they made big changes around the draft, how would Matthews feel about it.”

Sounds more like he’s saying Matthews wants to see what the team looks like before he signs, not who the GM is

  6. carletondabare

A superstar wants to wait and see the new GM, coach, and overall direction of the team before committing the rest of his prime? Shocking.

  7. Gear4Vegito

If Matthews only real desire to stay in Toronto is based on Dubas then honestly it might be best to move him. We need players that want to play for this city and bleed blue not just for a friend.

  8. Swaggy_McMuffin

Meh. Without a doubt one of the softies on the team texted that. Imagine a guy like tkachuk saying something like that and being worried about it. Would just say “fuck matthews” and be on with it.

  9. kingex11

If Dubas was the sole reason for Matthews’s desire to remain a Leaf then trade him tomorrow

  10. All this whinny news is getting so annoying. While people can be disappointed about the way things went down, why are so many people angry about a dude that ultimately underachieved as GM of the leafs being let go? Like we’ve lost some sort of god. If there are players that are angry about Dubas leaving, they should probably be angry at themselves for constantly failing when he put his faith in them. Maybe MLSE is toxic, maybe Shanny should be fired, doesn’t change the fact the Dubas as GM built a team that couldn’t win more than 1 round in 5 years while he was at the helm and ‘putting his career on the line’ for this core. Whining and excuses are for losers, they need a culture reset and if players want to leave with Dubas being let go, that says more about the players and culture. They’ve tied themselves to a person vs a team and what being part of the leafs truly means

  11. wicked_crayfish

That’s not news.. no one knows now that’s true. Lol but I can’t see Kyle being the only fucking reason he plays here that’s insane logic.

    🎶 I see a bad moon risin’,
I see trouble on the way,
    I see earthquakes and lightning,
    I see a bad time today🎶🎶

  13. Letterkenny_Irish

I mean.. the season just ended, and they don’t have a GM currently.

As well, correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t the leafs org have to wait til July 1 to start negotiating the next contract anyway? So another player saying they aren’t sure what’s gonna happen is… par for the course at this point??

Friedge usually has meaningful updates but this just seems extra clickbaity even for insider headlines.

  14. ChildhoodLoud3031

I will boo 34 every game if he doesn’t resign here. Absolute joke to not want to play here, small toke player if true.

  15. Samurai1221

I find it very hard to believe a current leafs player is texting elliot freidman speculation about another plays contract lol.

  16. LeafsRealist

No shit. He’s hardly gonna go around the lockerroom telling everyone his plans.

This is a nothing comment that gets singled out and emphasized now we’re talking about it feeding into the frenzy further encouraging more posts like this. The media/fan relationship in this city is god awful.

  17. EntryDiligent6908

The “player” was cheerleader Wayne Simmonds and if that’s true Shanny needs to sit down with Auston and get a trade done asap. I really don’t care about Matthews enough, his most memorable performance as a leaf was opening day of his rookie season, which also, the high point of this current tenure before Tavares scored the goal to move on. Trade 34, flip the page, tear the bandaid off.

  18. AllOfTheAbove100

I don’t like the idea of trading him at all, but if this is the sentiment, you gotta do it. Doesn’t matter how talented or valuable he is if you don’t know what he’s going to do.

Matthews can easily get you 3 solid pieces in a trade vs potentially nothing next off-season. Not worth the risk with all the crap this franchise went through for a decade before.

  19. ohandleme

If Matthews doesn’t want to re-sign because Dubas is GM then have a good career bud.

  20. CMDRShepardN7

Here is what the trade would look like. He gets traded to a team he doesn’t want to play for and not likely extending. Team underpays.

He goes to a team that he would sign an extension to, but other team doesn’t even make an offer until after July 1, where we negotiate from a weak position. Team underpays.

Trading him will make the team worse, and give us capspace to allow us to overpay for middle of the pack grit that won’t move the needle.

There is no scenario where we benefit. For the next decade we will make moves to mitigate the loss. So this last post-season is probably the last playoff hockey we get for a very long time.

  21. JackRusselTerrorist

Pridham needs to start fielding offers from around the league.

Tell Austin he’s either signing by June 15th, to one of a few packages Pridham puts together, or he’s playing on x team this season.

Can’t risk ending up in a Calgary situation.

    Ditto Nylander.

    Ditto Marner next offseason.

With Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Tavares all reaching the ends of their contracts, this team is at a crossroads.

And as much as I love Matthews, you gotta be worried about his health when handing out a 13M contract. I don’t buy the narrative that he didn’t battle these playoffs. Dude hit, and routinely dominated the ice when he was on it, but the results weren’t there, and I haven’t seen his insane shot in a while. He’s still a menace without it, but he’s not a $13M player without it.

  22. howsshegoin

if this is true they need to be knocking on dubas’ door with a full apology and a blank cheque ASAP

  23. EddyMcDee

If this is true and nobody in the organization knew it, that’s a big problem.

  24. thismadhatter

If Matthews cared he would have signed for 8 years last contract. Just saying.

  25. Jmac24mats13

If Matthews is waiting to see what happens to Marner, and if he gets traded doesn’t wanna sign before July 1 or possibly at all, even if the return is different than Marner, but what the team needs to win in the playoffs, I don’t know what to say really other than see ya. Players have ran the show for to long and it’s time for management for take it back. They should do whatever they can to keep Matthews, but if it’s means keeping the same core (especially Marner) and giving Auston 15M to do that, than unfortunately he’s gotta go too. The Leafs will not win the playoffs if this going trend keeps happening

  26. NEWaytheWIND

Pivot now. Be middling for a few years and keep cap space open for McDick’s homecoming.

  27. GQMatthews

They’re done. The team is cooked. We’re going back to nothingness. There is nothing bright or exciting about what has happened. This is a clusterfuck of fuck ups and will lead to many many fans swearing off the team.

  28. Steakholder_

That’s pretty obvious. There’s all kinds of turmoil at the moment and Matthews wants to know what kind of team he’d be committing to before signing. I’d do the same.

  29. DC-Toronto

Of course no one is sure. It would always be this way. No move clause and a player who doesn’t deliver in the playoffs it reportedly wants a huge contract next year.

It’s decision time right now. It would always be up in the air. This isn’t news unless you’ve been hiding under a rock.

  30. Flashy_Ferret_1819

If the Leafs can’t get a deal in principle in place that makes sense before the draft they have no choice but to trade him. Doing anything else makes zero sense

  31. Leafsnthings

If matty wants to be here he’ll be here, if he doesnt want to be here there’s nothing that will change his mind, figure out what it’ll be before the no move kicks in and go from there, waiting till it’s too late would be a disaster though

  32. krazykanuck

This is going to be hugely unpopular, but I think they need to look at trade scenarios.

  33. Kamdog11

    Matthews will stay.
    Enough of this drama.

  34. RattledRed

If Matty is only playing here because of a GM then that points to alot of issues….

  35. Judge_Tredd

Trade players for a bunch of 1st rd picks 2026

  36. Friggin_Grease

Nobody was sure before, but sure as shit nobody is sure after…
