Did Brent Burns spear Matthew Tkachuk? Have your say!

Brent Burns bent down to pick up his stick. It ended up between Matthew Tkachuk’s legs, and Tkachuk sure reacted as if there was some type of stick contact to his lower body. Was it a spear? Was it a slash? Or was it just embellishment? Tough Call will be reviewing the incident. Have your say!

  1. Tough call…but I can definitively say Tkachuk tried spearing a goalie in the eye through his cage. Game on.

  2. Former hack referee says inconclusive based just on this video selection. It's all circumstantial, but like a puck you can't see under the goalie's pads over the line, this video is blocking where the stick actually goes. This could be any of: Tkachuk embellishment, Burns minor slash to leg, Burns minor slash to leg + Tkachuk minor unsportsmanlike diving, Burns major slash to groin + game (if it was an upward motion and the shaft of the stick gets him), Burns major spearing + game (if toe of stick gets him), or Burns match for slashing or spearing + game + meeting & suspension.

Based on this video the only person with a position good enough to make a call is the linesman, and if he discussed it with the referee(s) and they concluded it was a minor or offsetting minors they probably stopped caring. Also, I'm sure Tkachuk's reputation (whatever you think it is) factored in. Otherwise lineys should be encouraged and supported more because they are allowed to make major/match penalty calls. And if this was 5-worthy and the linesmen just didn't have the courage that's too bad.

  3. At least it didn’t lead directly to the series winning goal like Bennett’s spear to Andersen’s leg did.

  4. I like Tkachuk but if he is going to be a mouthy shit disturber like he has then he should step up and fight Burns instead of throwing punches when the linemen are in between them.

  5. Next time slash his neck and body slam him like Bennett, no suspension what so ever. Burns did nothing wrong

  6. There was motion of spear and looks like contact so penalty however embellishment is also a penalty

  7. Well….mI cannot stand watching playoffs anymore…..so many calls NOT called.
The only professional sport where the "rules" change the deeper [he teams go toward the Cup. Sorry to be so negative. Just wish the Rules would stay constant in a pro sport.

  8. You can see the stick coming out from between tkachuks legs… but he is a known embellisher so it probably didn't hurt at all.

  9. if you look really closely you can actually see the blade of Burns' stick peeking out slightly below the choda, definitely a shot to the sack, makes me wonder what happened prior, not often you see a player like Burns strike a man so fiercely in the gooch, you know? Tkachuk might not have been embellishing as much as it looks because sometimes a shot in the pills does rattle the branches a bit but even with a bruised taint he's still a massive threat for that classic "too hard" revenge shot to the perineum
