  1. Dang that's an interesting situation for the Wolves. Thanks for the AHL update Shannon, yeah I'd like to hear more AHL news (but I don't know where you would possibly squeeze it in lol)

  2. As a Roadrunners STH, I appreciate the love for Carcone.
    One little thing though…
    It's TUCSON!
    Thanks.

  3. If the Wolves can make it work, that'd be great, but my ECHL team (ironically the one that gets leftovers from the Wolves and Canes) never looked worse in their previous division than the year where they went independent (2019-20), where they spent like one night about two weeks into the season at a .500 points% and then dove straight to the abyss. At least in the two years they played on either side of that season (as they sat out 20-21 rather than lose money playing in an empty building), years where they had NHL/AHL ties, they looked like they had a legitimate shot at the playoffs through the first two months of the season before imploding in December. So while that may be heavily skewed by being a poorly run boy's club in an awkwardly-positioned market that succumbed to fan apathy years ago, I still think it doesn't bode well for the Wolves.

Note that this season, they didn't even have the luxury of teasing people, getting switched from the ECHL's shitshow division to its best division thanks to expansion resulted in them getting shredded in their first several games, then immediately going into another long pointless streak right after their first win. Hell, the owner was even forced to fire his head coach, who just happened to be the ECHL equivalent of Wayne Gretzky both on the ice and behind the bench. (Not that it helped…)

  4. OK, I tried Shannon but it's the AHL – I couldn't do it. Maybe next time.

  5. The wolves have always been independent in their own way and that’s what makes them one of the best minor league teams they do their own thing and I wish more ahl teams would go this route

  6. As a wolves season ticket holder… This year the AHL contract guys and random pick ups from other teams have thoroughly outplayed the young hurricane prospects. So I see where they are coming from. Interesting times.

  7. Only time I've seen the wranglers play was when they were the Stockton Heat, first ever AHL game.

  8. This makes me kind of excited but bummed. We went to an Iowa Wild game and have gone to NHL, NAHL, N3HL (can you tell we like hockey). The compete level is pretty good across the different levels, officiating has its issues across all the levels. The skill level of the players change, but they are all worth watching because of the love of the game. I am biased, but Iowa does a good job playing all their players, it’s not dominated by the big names/veterans/etc, but it’s still quality hockey.

One of my gripes when someone is out for the win, those boys who opted to skip out of college to play AHL and then went on to play so few minutes.

  9. The AHL's streaming service is very affordable and worth every penny it's a fairly raw production but still presented well only problem I've had is the Kings and Reign are often scheduled at the same time but still worth it

  10. First, thanks for using a thumbnail of the 2019 Charlotte/Chicago Calder Cup Championship series (in which Charlotte won 🙂).

Apparently the AHL is doing pretty well this; I'll have to find my source, but I think I remember reading recently that revenue is up something like 50% over the 2018-19 season (the last full season before Covid)

As far as the president thing, the NHL is involved because several (I'm not sure exactly but I think more than half) AHL clubs are now owned by the NHL parent club.

This will be interesting to see what happens; not only for Chicago if they go this route, but for the Hurricanes since they'll be without an affiliate.

  11. When Carolina was excited about their partnership with the Wolves, I figured that wouldn’t last. As much as some of the 2019 Blues previously played with the Wolves, that was not a good partnership. So much happier with the Thunderbirds.

  12. If you can do it, more AHL videos. Please. This was great. I know you’re crunched but covering the NHL. But if you can manage it, more AHL content would be appreciated. Thank you, Shannon.

  13. So what happens to the drafted Hurricanes prospects playing for the Wolves? Do they no longer play for the Wolves effective some date? Would there be an AHL expansion to add a new team as a Carolina affiliate?

  14. I remember years ago the Blackhawks lent rookie J.P. Dumont to the Wolves for a Playoff run when the Wolves were still in the IHL. And Mike Keenan when GM of the Florida Panthers, sent a couple young players to the Wolves for a Calder Cup run. One player was Jay Bouwmeester, but I don't recall the other.

  15. I guess the first big question is if the AHL is willing to add another team

  16. NHL owners: Gary, seems to be there's a issue with an AHL owner
Gary: don't worry, I'm sending Bill "Sammy the Bull" Daly to have a chat with them.

  17. Why doesn't the Chicago Wolves create a new league called the IHL, and then rule that league with an iron fist? They can sell it as the best beer league in the world. Bud Lights for all the bois

  18. Born in Wilkes Barre so I peripherally follow the WBS AHL Pens. Appreciate this video and would love to see a monthly like this!

  19. So if this happens will any NHL team have the option to send players who they don't have space on their ahl roster to the wolves? Will players on this team still be able to get called up and be a prospect of someone? They are still in a development league so I think they're has to be some precautions to this approach.

  20. Wolf leads the AHL in SV% GAA Wins and Shutouts, should probably win AHL MVP and has already ran away with goalie of the year.

  21. Gotta say I adore the Wranglers uniforms, and I've always wanted the Flames to have a different horse-styled logo and I love that alternative logo, even more than blasty (my Calgary friends don't exactly approve of this opinion). Also as an Edmonton fan who's biased towards American goalies and wants Calgary to do better (long story), I am extremely excited and scared for Dustin Wolf.

  22. Do you think it could be a good idea for Quebec City to have an Independant AHL team too? The Nordiques won't come back anyway, it would be better than nothing!

  23. I think this might be the best model going forward. Have independently owned teams in the same league with the NHL owned farm teams and maybe include some type of promotion and relegation between the AHL and ECHL.

Both sides would be happy, they’d make money and prospects would get better with the increased competition and higher stakes. Therefore they come into the NHL more battle tested and ready to contribute.
