Dumb question but how did he get to college hockey? I know you see it with Jack Hughes and others but just seems like top 10 picks go play in the minor leagues and not college. Did the Avalanche just use UMass as his minor league development?
NBA basketball teams usually draft guys in their 20's. Easier evaluation. NHL drafts guys 18. Those are critical 2 years. The NHL has several solid players that were never drafted and signed as free agents. Maybe they passed on a guy 5" 10" and 180 pounds. 2 years later the guy is 6' 2" 215 lbs. Big enough to push guys around and also stick around.
As an old-school guy from the 70's and 80's who's literally talked Hockey in person with Bobby Orr– you'll often hear guys from my generation not give credit to any of the younger players. But this kid is for real… A generational player. His vision of the moving chess pieces, his ability to keep his head up while stick handling, and his Hockey IQ. Just a special special player.
Hextall picked Patrick because he himself had ties from his junior career to Brandon. Patrick could very well be the worst pick in Flyers history. Then they turn around and possibly make the worst trade in Flyers history by getting Ellis.

Who is the BEST player from the 2017 draft class?
This has been settled. All hail Cale
Makar best player in the world
"O fence, O fence… looks at the blue line O fence." 🤣
I got to witness Cale's very first NHL goal a playoff goal. It was Beautiful 🏒 And now Stanley Cup Champion 🏆
Pure luck. Just like how they won 🏆 last year.
Dominant, you say?
Very good video. Keep up the in depth looks at talent.
This video aged well.
Easy to be an excellent drafter in hindsight. Nick Lidstrom was passed by every team twice before he was drafted.
Thank you 3 Teams with horrible hockey sense for passing, we'll take great care of him in Colorado

As an Avs fan, im so glad he was passed up on 3 times 😀
Commenting on this in 2022 and you got this analysis bang on. Well done.
