Should the Montreal Canadiens trade their first round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft?

Inside today’s Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens announced today that they will not offer prospect Frederik Dichow a contract, and that the goalie will become a free agent on June 1st. However, the Canadiens are not without potential options in the minor leagues next season as a loophole has allowed Joe Vrbetic to escape needing an NHL deal for another two years. So where does this leave the Canadiens in terms of goalies now?

With the Stanley Cup Final just days away from starting, Scott and Laura take a look at the few former Habs playing for the Cup, and if that sways their rooting interests at all. Also, with Shea Weber being a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, would the club petition the league to get his name added to the trophy, despite not playing a single game for the team? Would Shea Weber even accept the honour at all?

Finally, should the Montreal Canadiens consider trading their first round pick this year? No, not the fifth overall one, but the Panthers pick at the end of round one. The hosts discuss the idea of trading for both immediate help, and help in the near future in terms of prospects or a pick in next year’s draft as well.

  1. Mailbag question: Do you think Hughes is waiting to see if the salary cap will go up before re-signing Caufield?

  2. If Montreal is set on not taking Michkov at 5 if he is available…why not solve our goaltending by trading Pick 5, Pick 31 or 32 and Primeau to Philadelphia for Carter Hart and Pick 7. Trading down 2 spots from 5 to 7 doesn't seem huge but everyone knows the top 5 players are at another level than prospects ranked 6 or lower so Pick 5 has a lot of value. However this trade only works if Michkov is available at 5, Montreal doesn't want him and Philadelphia does want Michkov. Lots of variables but you never know.
