Comparing Dubas Press Conferences From Toronto to Pittsburgh and My Opinion

Since everyone is debating what Kyle was thinking or how this entire mess unfolded, I wanted to go through both press conferences and give my opinion on him and the move he made.

  1. Used to like Pittsburgh – Not any many. I hope they continue having dismal seasons with Mr Nerd Boy in charge. The NHL isn't moneyball – and I'm surprised it took Toronto so long to get rid of him.

  2. For Toronto and Shanahan this will turn out in the long term to be the best decision he has ever made. His worst decision almost made worse by resigning Dubas is now gone.

  3. As a Columbus fan, I hate the Pens and still do, but it's hard to root against Dubas. He seems like a genuinely good guy.

As a third party to all of this, it's amusing to me that everyone in hockey media/fandom thought the Leafs were mismanaged and clowned on them, but they are all suddenly openly lusting over their available executives, coaches, and potentially core4 players.

  4. I don't really know if I agree with this take… Sounds a lot like you are trying to garner sympathy for Dubas. It seems to me that Dubas, his agent, and the MLSE all agreed on a reasonable extension for Dubas. At some point, Dubas must have decided other hockey clubs would pay him more- so he wanted to walk back on his agreement with MLSE. In order to leverage the organization, he threw his wife and kids under the bus. After the MLSE refused his late counteroffer, he walked back entirely on the whole, "my wife and kids are stressed" rhetoric and claimed to be 100% with Toronto. At that point, the Leafs hands were tied. There's a right and a wrong way to negotiate with your boss- Dubas did it wrong and all of the support he gets from fans and the media is concerning to me. It sets a dangerous precedence- that, you can negotiate in good faith, come up with a reasonable outcome, then change your mind. How do you go into business with people like that? It's completely unprofessional…

  5. "That's how you end up single." Haha. Thank you. This is the truth. I cringe at all of the comments about people thinking it is ridiculous to consult your wife on life decisions.

  6. Dubas did the right thing in taking the job in Pittsburgh but it happened because he publicly showed lack of determination and will to continue to be GM of the Leafs.

  7. Dude used his mental health and his family as leverage. Good riddance. Best of luck in Pittsburgh, he will fit right in.

  8. the waddel comparison was fun to hear as a Canes fan, I think hes a very talented manager who was in a bad spot in Toronto tbh

  9. I'm so excited to have Dubas on board. I do think he's really gonna help us. The pens situation isn't as bad as people make it out to be

  10. Most of the Leafs are there because of Dubas except Rielly, Nylander, Marner, Matthews, Robertson, and Liljegren

  11. Excellent! I have been hearing so much trash about the Toronto press conference and how Dubas betrayed Toronto. You have looked at both media presentations with intelligence and no bias. Well done. I am Canadian, and a strong Pittsburgh fan. I have no idea how this will look at the end of next season, but I see Dubas as a breath of fresh air and someone who has come into the job with aspirations that match those of the team, in particular the core players. Win. I look forward to seeing how this plays out. Thank you for this!

  12. How on Earth, Darcy Regier doesn’t have a top level NHL job is just ridiculous. 😂

  13. let me say dubass is nowehere near as smart as he portrays himself as. Just bcause he has a degree , wears glasses and uses vocabulary like "recalibrate" to impress everybody all the time doesnt means hes a genius. He the exact opposite. Pittsburgh is really foolish to go so hard after him like hes their savior.Let me say anybody with a decent even general knowledge of the nhl and its players could do a FAR better job then dubas did in toronto.Building a soft team with no grit and top heavy with 4 player who eat up a huge portion of the payroll is just plain stupid. That is not a balanced team…They had a great offensive team without tavares but instead of addressing defense he gets tavares. Oh and let me add you need character and integrity to succeed in any wak of life. That stunt marner and nylander pulled when the leafs offered them fair market value then they sat out of camp…..would have made me dismiss them immediately ….but this moron insread gives them a huge contract. Tavares flat out lied to islander management..and dubas signs him to a huge contract yet again. THis guy is a total moron who presents himself as a intellect.

  14. He was fired, what did they expect for him to just not work for the rest of his life?

  15. It’s nice to see a common sense take. Shanny has his own expectations and prerogative, but at the same time Dubas didn’t owe them anything after he was let go. Pens ownership can move forward with their own hires rather than the friction with what they inherited.

  16. You are a level-headed guy. Too bad you have to suffer with the Canucks. Too often Leaf fans are over the top they treat the organization like a religion.

  17. The hockey version of Alex Anthopoulous. Leave Toronto for another job and win a championship and in Toronto, replacing said ex employee for someone who hasnt won anything and probably never will. THATS SO TORONTO!!!

  18. The Penguins’s ownership has short patience with their president and GM. Kyle Dubas will last no more than two seasons if he can’t get the team past Round 1 of the playoffs!

  19. @shannon, where you are wrong is, he should have waited to talk to his family before doing is press conference. This, look to me like he tried to put pressure on the Toronto organization.
Never forget, we mostly are not working in position where there is a big public "interface" you always have to take into account.
So I really think he did it on purpose…
By the way, I'm not a Leafs fan (Habs here)

  20. How much did Dubas pay you for this puff piece? The dude didn’t even mention or thank the Leafs once, unlike Tre did with Calgary. So disrespectful, shows his true colours.

  21. Agreed, I'm a 58 year old life long Leaf fan and I am officially done wth Shanahan and the Leafs.
A Penguins fan now, already have my Pens jersey on order.
