Most of it was his own fault but to be fair Berg didn’t have a lot of top end talent to work with, especially at forward. Id be curious to see what he could do with a team like Toronto. I think if he make a few of his beloved bottom 6 moves and made them a little “uglier” it might just work.
Plus he’d definitely have the balls to give the core a big shake up after a failed run or two (Marner).

No, but Gainey became a consultant with Dallas & was at the POHO level – better than G.M. Bergevin, Houle & Grundman sucked. Andre Savard didn’t want to be a G.M. Serge Savard & Pollack retired from hockey.

Not super surprising with some context. From 1946 to 1995 we only had 4 gms and given the job is a senior level position most were in the mid 50s and were able to retire.
From 95-now we had several “my qualification is I speak french and worked for the molson family” who didnt really have any connections outside the org to get in the running elsewhere and a few that maybe could have found spots but didnt try too hard to (gainey).
Its important to remember to unless ypu push into your late50s ealry 60s you run out of time.
Steve Yzerman seems pretty young right? Hes 58 years old.

Because they’ve fucking sucked since Savard. No one would look at the Habs’ results since 1994 and say “Oh yeah, we need that on our team”.

Scotty Bowman should have succeeded Sam Pollock. Grundman ran a great dynasty into the ground. Bowman left and guided the Red Wings back to glory.

Toronto should’ve hired Bergevin, he’s a perfect fit for them. They have no picks and like 4 30 goal scorers his weaknesses can’t hurt them.

If it makes you feel better, no Sens coach has gone on to coach another NHL team since Jacques Martin. The Sens have had nine coaches since then.

Because we don’t hire the best, we hire the GM that appeases the fan base. One of the Habs biggest issues has been needing to hire French speaking management which severely limits the pool of people to pick from
