Ivan Provorov Scouting Report

I was still in the middle of my potential acquisition series when the trade dropped.

Here’s a quick overview using public analytics and hand-tracked data of Provorov’s game. It’s a pretty quick read and is a great way to get yourself more informed about. CBJ’s first acquisition this off-season.

I’m not a fan of the acquisition, especially the person, but there are some angles for him to play well outside of Philadelphia.

Hopefully the new coaching staff asks the D to play in a more progressive manner and we can learn from Gavrikov’s glow up in a better system.

[I think doing a deeper dive into who has been selected at 22 OA](https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/draft_by_pick.php?position=22) is necessary. The most recent comparable D-man taken 22OA would be [Olli Maatta](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/maattol01.html). If this was CBJ’s only 1st round pick, it would be a mistake. But, it’s not, since we have the 3rd best pick this draft.

Provorov fills an immediately Top-4 position and his analytics need to be seen with an asterik around his stats: he played for Philly with linemates like DeAngelo and Cam York. He is a strong puck-moving defenseman with alot of upside. I think that he is going to do well here.

imo people are overreacting he is better than a lot of other nhl defensmen. please realize he was playing for shitty demotivated team full of troubles. i think he will be good player for us and we will miss him once he decides to test FA market

Jarmo probably thinks he can flip at trade deadline when contract is expiring for a first round pick. (If he isn’t injured)

He is an nhl top 4 defenseman which this team needed. 22 overall does nothing for us at the moment. If he pops off that’s great, if not we flip him in a year. It’s a good move

Provorov is better than his analytics show. Hes extremely talented and when he actually tries and plays to his potential he looks like a top pair stud. Unfortunately thats rarely been the case the last 3 seasons and has just checked out and completely stopped trying to even drive play and create offense.

But if you put him on 2nd pair with good play driver I think he will be a great addition.

The guy is a machine that can play 30 minutes no problem and has only missed 1 game in his entire career which was due to covid. This is probably is pretty valuable for you guys and your injuries. Especially with Werenski being #1LHD. Pretty good back up 1LHD to have …

And when he tries to actually create offense he can really score. He just has stopped trying completely except for in 3v3 then he all the sudden looks like old Provorov.

**To give you an idea of how good Provorov can be. At age 20 he lead all NHL dmen in goals while playing 25 minute shutdown role vs top lines and starting in D zone 60% of the time. Had 15 5v5 goals that year.**

Early in his career he was so good at picking his spots to go up on rush and score. Now he never does that. I remember thinking he could be a 20 goal guy because he a master at finding those openings to get A chances on the rush. Then scored 17 goals the following year. But then stopped going up completely after that.

If he plays with confidence and in better situation like early in career you could have a really good all situations 2/3D.

And people forget hes only 26 since hes been in NHL since 19.

Many people are trashing the trade for you guys but I dont think its bad. Even in this deep draft late 1sts rarely become as good as Provorov.

Provorov gives much needed depth experience to the D core.
