Hayes is 1000% spot on with this take. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with all of these guys always fighting him on this point.

  2. LostInAwe55

To be fair, if anyone deserves to have his water carried, it’s Auston Fuckin Matthews

Edit : he’s the best player the Leafs have ever had and people want to get mad over 1 or 2 million. The problem the leafs have is 3 players over 10m.

  3. I_am_Howie_Dewitt

Johnson has carried the water of Auston/Willie/Mitch and Keefe/Dubas since he took over for Ray

I don’t know if it’s his bit – “voice of the players” – but he’ll never win an argument over “voice of the people” Bryan Hayes

We’ll deal with whatever happens, obviously. But if he signs less than 8 years, there will be a lot of disappointment.

Obviously AM doesn’t care about that, I’m just saying. It’s likely not going to be 8 years, so prepare for that.

The league is fucked and the hard cap makes it so you can’t keep your players. That sucks, no question. But it also isn’t changing. So what do you do? Just continue to get assfucked by your players? Let 4 guys dictate the terms because they are some of the most talented players in the world despite the team not having won shit?

Are you guys ready for 4-5 more years (minimum) of the same horseshit? You have a lot more tolerance than I do, then.

To be clear, this isn’t even about Matthews specifically. I hope he’s a Leaf forever. But what he does July 1 will directly affect the rest of the team in ways that will literally make us or break us. I don’t think that’s a very hot take, either

“Everyone takes 8 years, why is it just the Leafs?”

No shit Hayesy, why is it just our guys looking for “flexibility” and maxxing out $$$

  6. TheDeek

Literally every core player on every other team in shittier markets takes 8 years…why not our guys? Drives me nuts.

Why are all these Toronto blowhards pumping up these numbers? I genuinely don’t get the incentive. Mackinnon by all objective measures is at least as good as Matthews.

He just signed for 12.7×8. Where the FFF is “just under 14×4” coming from? how can they possibly think that’s reasonable? I feel like im taking crazy pills again to when Mitch blowhards were saying he deserves 11M$ for months on end when he was clearly worth 9. Then he ended up getting it and blowing up our structure.

Just STAND. FIRM. Mathews aint leaving if you offer 12.7×6 or 13×8. What’s his alternative. USE YOUR LEVERAGE LEAFS

johnson embarrassed hayes here. auston matthews owes the leafs nothing. he’s absolutely entitled to whatever he wants in terms of compensation.

his point about the importance of becoming the first 200m player is a salient one. that has to be top of mind.

15.34m x 3yrs makes sense for all involved. there’s a lot of prestige from a team side to award the highest aav contract.

  9. NervousBreakdown

Toronto sports media spends two years speculating that matthews will demand insane sum so they can get clicks, now other Toronto media is outraged at the possibility that matthews will demand insane sum.

The entire organization is shifting to make sure we re-sign Auston. This is the same effort and commitment we put in to draft him originally. If money is the main issue, he should sign for 8 years at the current league max which will look affordable in the years to come. 100% commitment from both sides. His time and Leaf’s money. Anything less than 8 years is a failure on both sides imo. Him not wanting to stay for longer years shows to me he doesn’t want to be here.

  11. 100MScoville

Max term for pretty much any sum of money is palatable imo, 10mil clears up in 2 years and there’s still the question of what happens to Marner and Willy going forward; if we’re punting on the upcoming seasons to retool around a 2x rocket winner, that’s a win

  12. Flashy_Ferret_1819

I’ve been saying it was a shitty deal last time from the day it was signed. The most player friendly contract to a guy coming out of entry level in the league. Until recently that opinion has always been shouted down and ridiculed. Undeniable 8 year money, all in bonuses without the cost certainly and control of an 8 year term that *should* have come with it. Marners deal was equally as weak. Dubas got schooled, and the Leafs have been scrambling ever since.

The media isn’t “harsh”, they practically bend over backwards to not be critical because cheering fanboy coverage gets higher ratings. Being suck ups gets better access and info. Not to mention the media companies own the team and would prefer (dictate?) Positive spins. Guys like Hayes probably weren’t anywhere near as big a fan of a lot of moves but it wasn’t good for business to say so. Only now when a significant portion of the fan base is fed up as well has it become more acceptable to be critical.

  13. hbooty93

Hayes was speaking from the heart and for all angry leaf fans who are wondering the same thing here.

  14. I’d like to see Matthews sign a 3 year deal, even if it’s inflated. I don’t think this team can win with JT’s contract as it is, so the first two years are a moot point. I also think Matthews value will drop relative to his peers over the next three years. He won’t be demanding league high salary by then. He already took a big step back this past year.

I’d much rather have a bad 3 year contract than a bad 8 year contract.

This is going to be agonizing until Matthews signs, Toronto media is unbearable.

Just straight making up scenarios, intentions, what they think the player wants. It’s hilarious.
