Montreal Canadiens trade Jeff Petry, Ryan Poehling to Pittsburgh for Mike Matheson, sign Rem Pitlick

After a long wait, the Montreal Canadiens have finally found a partner for a Jeff Petry trade, shipping the defenceman, and forward Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Mike Matheson and a draft pick. At first glance it feels like a loss for the Canadiens as their top right side defender is shipped out of town, leaving just David Savard in that role. However, as the hosts take a look at his microstats and development trend, did Kent Hughes pull off a sneaky good bit of work? At the very least, the Canadiens freed up more cap room, which allowed them to make more moves over the weekend as well.

Namely, Montreal has re-signed Rem Pitlick to a two-year contract! After electing to not qualify the forward, thus avoiding arbitration, the Canadiens were able to bring him back on a very cheap $1.1million AAV contract for the next two years. Where does Pitlick slot into the lineup, and does his return slow the full-time NHL debuts of Jesse Ylönen and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard?

The Habs weren’t the only busy team though, as the Laval Rocket made a slew of moves to get themselves ready for next season. Scott takes a look at the return of Gabriel Bourque to the Rocket, in addition to the new prospects joining the goaltending posse. Who is Philippe Desrosiers and Joe Vrbetic and where do they fit in the Montreal goaltending pipeline?

  1. i liked the trade from the first i heard. it's a guy 6 years younger who is comming off a break out season. i love petry but he wants to go and deserves it because he did everything possible for the habs until the covid issue. good luck to him.

this year is not the year to go for pld. next summer or the trade deadline when they have established their place as a lottery pick, but if they do it the habs are not trading caufield or suzuki. not a chance. the package available is something like dach, a top d praspect(barron or harros) and the first rounder they have as a spare next year. But if they wait next year they have a lot more leverage i pld holds firm, takes his last contract and then few teams will even want him f he isn't going to sign.

right now i;d offer dach, hoffman harris or baron. at best. are the jests desperate? maybe

  2. Petry's age does not align or even overlap the end product of the rebuild. He may only have another 1 or 2 good years in him so it makes sense to get a younger decent defenseman even if he can't replace the offence. And of course, there's saving cap space and his family. As for Poehling he was a fringe forward on a weak team. Poehling still has potential but it was necessary to sweeten the pot. Let's face it, we had plenty of reasons to unload Petry and his limited shelf life makes him a virtual rental.

  3. I feel like Laura hit the nail on the head. Petry is 34 and had a sh_t year. Yes, he was a BEAST during our finals run, but that was a few yrs ago now. Mike Matheson had a career year last year, is also a great skater, is only 28yrs old, and almost as big as Petry at 6ft2. Apparently Kent really wanted Matheson, he knows him well, says he's a 5 star human and blablabla. Let's see.

  4. The only thing I disagree with is Montambault clearing waivers. I would put a 5 dollar wager that he does not clear waivers. Montambault is a cheap NHL quality goalie that will not clear waivers. If I am wrong I will stand corrected. I do not see Price returning…. My view on Price… his body language. What he says and how he acts… the shine of Hockey is gone for Price. I get the feeling Price would simply want to do something else with his life… it is a hunch… a feeling. Price is bound by golden handcuffs… a big contract and a failing body. As for PLD…. DO WE WANT DROUIN part Deux…. A guy that was unhappy in two places…. No way Jose…. Stay away… stay far away

  5. The Petry trade really was Petry 35 year and Ryan Poehling old for Mathewson 6 years younger REM Pitlick 1 million cap space and REM Pitlick. While Pitlick is not named in the trade he was a by product. Put in that light the trade is more balanced. Now let’s take that fourth and turn it into VALUE…..BECAUSE a fourth has some value

  6. I’m fine with this trade all around in my mind this is a clear “tank” move
We get a younger D man coming off a career year but no offence too Matheson but he will probably get shredded defensively if we put him on our top pair
Although I will say this trade has some potential to make us look silly if petry and poehling both even half decent seasons next year we probably lose this trade🤷🏽‍♂️
But honestly that’s ok you can’t win every trade Hughes got what he could with the hand he was dealt petry had to go and this was the best deal avalible
Also please for the love of god let’s these PLD rumours stop it is not this teams time to make a big trade for a questionable player let’s stay on track and tank it for bedard

  7. The way I see it, this is the second time Dubois has wanted out of a team; the question is, will it happen again ? I like Dubois but we already have an unknown quantity in Kirby Dach so unless Winnipeg are willing to swap Dubois for Dach, we should stand pat.
P.S. Suzuki for PLD ? No effing way !

  8. Look at the return TB and SJ got for Burns and McDonaugh and tell me the Petry deal is bad…

Cmon, Hughes did a great job getting actual return for a 35 yo defense.

Matheson is a good def (2nd pair). Great skater, great at getting the puck out of the def zone and into the off zone.

Anybody saying its a clear loss is dumb and not looking at the market at all.

  9. I wasnt expected a great return for Petry given what the sharks got back for Burns. However i feel this is a big Pens win for this trade. Paehling has size and talent but lacks worth ethic. If he figures that out he is gonna be a decent player. Habs lack size up front and many of their forward prospects are on the small side. No offense to Matheson but he is not as good as Petry and his contract is 4 more years compared to Petrys 3 years so basically no cap savings. He is a left D so there is virtually no room for him on that side. Perhaps he can play the right side? I would have preferred a 4rd rd pick straight up for Petry so you get the cap savings.

  10. I said that Emily Matheson was a Canadian Olympic gold medalist but she is a US Olympic gold medalist. Was just subconsciously being greedy.

  11. I'm not enthused with the return from the Petry trade, but I'm okay with it – not a home run but potentially a solid double. Losing Poehling sucks but the Habs will get by. Future still looks good.

  12. As for the Jets …Hughes has all the leverage there. If chevaldaeoff tries to trade PLD to another team he wont get much of a return for a player who plans to leave for Mtl in 2 years anyways. Hughes is smart and will try to work out a sneaky trade where he gives up some talent, but talent on big deals to help with cap space. No need to give up a top prospect , or 1st rd draft picks. The trade definately starts with Dvorak and if he can start the year the way he finished last season then it might convince the Jets to make this deal. I would throw in Armia since jets are familar with him. And the jets can choose 2 b level prospects between smilanic, mysak, harvey-pinard, simonneau, ylonen, kapanen, and a couple of 3rd and 4th rd picks to top it off. Jets fans will hate it, but its take it or leave it and let PLD walk for nothing in 2 years

  13. Regarding PLD… he makes more sense for the Habs at least a year or two down the road so I doubt Hughes is feeling pressure about acquiring him. The Jets of course want to get as much as they can for him, but any team in 'win now' mode would be willing to pay more. Unrelated: glad Rem Pitlick is signed and that the Lions are getting new players.

  14. Mailbag question: 1) Should the Habs take a flyer on Michael DiPietro to improve the goaltending depth within the Habs organization>
    2) Which music festival are you? Osheaga, Heavy MTL, Ile Soniq, or Lasso MTL?

  15. Petry trade with Peohling is good one. They get a serviceable Defenseman. They save 2.2 million on the cap, and sign #RemPitlick. Condering #Patches was traded for magic beans or Future considerations. I win for Hughes. Is was not too long ago, when people who saying that a 1st round pick would need to be attached to trade Petry. Considering #MapleLeafs had to give 3 draft picks, to shred salary in the last draft and a 1st round pick.

  16. In the post trade interview, Hughes said he believes Matheson could play RD which is nice given the Habs lost some flexibility there with the Romanov trade.

Edit: Oettinger was predicted to be a star. He's one of only a handful of 1st round tenders in the last decade. Nothing surprising about his play.

  17. I agree. This trade time will tell, I’m happy the Habs did what is in Jeff’s best interest. Also I think Ryan needed a change of scenery. Your knowledge in hockey is crazy good. I have a buddy that says if you go to an NFL game you have to be quiet because those fans know what the kid did in high school lol. I feel the same way when Laura spoke about how the cap works and player salary. That’s a level I don’t know and never will but it’s sure interesting to hear. I don’t have high expectations this year but I like the pace the team is moving in. I hope we don’t make a silly trade to the Jets. If PLD wants to play for the Habs then come sign when it’s time.

  18. The same journalists who says the habs are interested by dubois are the same one who were saying the habs were about to pick wright #1 haha

  19. If your looking at Twitter, then your only reading non informed people who said Montreal lost. If this is a win or lose situation, then Montreal won here by creating cap room to sign Pitlick who played great for Montreal last year at a good AAV cap it and got younger with Matheson who is 6 years younger then Petry. If your reading You Tube comments and on reddit, fans were happy with this deal.

Its another win by Hughes and company. Its how you work around the cap and Montreal is not retooling, we are rebuilding. if people expect Montreal to be competitive, then I don't know what world they are in. They need to think long into the future and Matheson helps with this because his cap hit is only 4.9 million.

Our defense this season will be Edmundson, Savard, Matheson, and Wideman for the veterans and Guhle, Barron and Harris as the rookies. This defense will need time to grow and build together so don't expect much for a team that is rebuilding but I have high hopes for the coming prospects that are making the team.

  20. Weren't both Petry and Poehling the closest players to Zack Kassian when
    Ran into Montembault?
Just for that reason, I'm glad they are both gone. Petry also allowed player ( I forget which one) to ram into Carrey Price doing the same thing Chris Kreider did which almost ruined Price's carreer.
What did Petry do to someone deliberately trying to injure your goaltender the best player on your team?
Absolutely nothing, he just stood there as if he didn't care at all.
He should have been traded the next day!!!

  21. The Mcdanaugh trade set the price, Hughes did a great job, we got a younger version of Jeff Petry. Loved what Petry brought, loved the family videos, but as Laura said age and contract,
