On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we evaluate the 2022-23 season for Sam Steel. We look at a career year compared to what he did previously throughout his career. We discuss his versatility, while also noting that each time he stepped into a particular spot in the lineup his production eventually fell off. We also discuss the need for his roster spot to go to younger players. We hand out letter grades in the following categories:

Defense: C-
Special Teams: C-
Postseason: C-
Overall: C-
We finish by looking at whether or not the Wild will look to retain Steel, or if they deal him to free up a roster spot!

While number don’t lie, ask a salesperson, Steel is a confusing player. He showed his value as well as his weaknesses. He seemed to play better as a plug in, but can’t take the reins consistently over the long haul. Hoping he heads to the off season trying to grab a C1 – C2 now that he understands the Wild’s needs but I’m not sure he has the ability to do so. Agreed, the monitory value would need to fall into place, so this will depend on how much Steel wants to stay. Grade is spot on, C – C- is correct as he is very expendable.
The organization asked WAY TOO MUCH of Steel. I am going to base my rating on what he is, an NHL 4C/borderline AHL 1C.
Regular season = B – (10 goals 18 assists +11)
Playoffs = B – (in 5 games he had a goal and and assist).
*I am ok with moving on from Steel.
Steel is a fourth liner as I said when we the Wild got him.For the year yah a C
