It really boils down to, do you want to try and continue building around Petey/Hughes/Demko and have a team that peaks sometime mid-2020’s.

We already are. Our future #1 dman Ben Hutton also just won the cup with them \s. Bo, Markstrom, Tanev were all trained here and then were poached. At least with Buffalo they got Tage and Tuch+ back whereas we only got Hronek and Raty back. The worst case scenario is not losing good players, it’s losing them for nothing and not being willing to take risks to improve your team.

Anyone who thinks that this team has rebuilt doesn’t understand the difference between rebuilding and failing.
Failing is what the Canucks have done. They’ve spent to the cap almost every season and said that their goals are playoffs. They continuously fail at that goal while having no cap space to make the moves that they need to year after year. Just because the team has finished lower in the standings does not mean that the team has rebuilt. The team has failed in spite of their efforts.
To rebuild is to actively devalue your current roster in order to improve your draft position. The secondary effect is trading your players for future assets (prospects and draft picks). The goal of the rebuild is to a mass, a group of talented young players so that they’re able to ascend together while filling in your needs with trades/ free agents.
The Canucks have not done this. They have not rebuilt.
The Canucks have failed.

i literally think doing nothing this summer will likely be better than any moves that rutherford will make this summer.

We tried to fly straight through the end of the Sedin era without ever rebuilding.
The problem is not that our rebuild is taking too long, it’s that it never started.
In a rebuild, we’d have traded assets to get picks in the late first and second rounds to accompany Hughes and Pettersson. Those massive hits in isolation do not a contender make.

I think entering into a rebuild now would be a mistake, because I believe that the post-Sedin rebuild is essentially complete. Was it optimal? Of course not. In fact, it’s largely luck that it happened under Benning’s watch. But he somehow was able to achieve what I believe to be the absolute goal of a rebuild: draft superstar talent. Everything else is supplementary; everything else is re-tooling.
I think the chaos, uncertainty, and general incompetence surrounding the team have put a damper on everything, and has somewhat obscured the talent that this team does have. All fundamental pieces for a competitive team are already in place. The Canucks have: a Hart- and Selke-level 1C that has all the potential to be the 2nd best centre in the league; a Norris-level 1D that is already the greatest defenceman in Canucks history; a star goalie who at his best is also Vezina-level. These are essential, and everything you pray for when you enter a rebuild. The Canucks already have them, and they’re still young.
They also have high-end supporting pieces in Miller, Kuzmenko, and Hronek (who I believe lots of people are sleeping on. He’s a very, very good player, and I hope isn’t hampered by his injury). Hirose is also found money, and should be able to run the 3rd pair no problem. They also have lots of good secondary support from their platoon of wingers, and a fairly dependable 4th line.
As I see it, there are only 2 major holes on this team: 3C and a RD to play with Hughes. Turfing Myers and keeping Bear would be ideal. Otherwise, I think some of the biggest flaws from this past year have been addressed and are on their way to improvement: Team defence and PK. I was skeptical of Tocchet at first, but he never had this level of talent to work with on the Coyotes. It’s clear that this roster needed structure and good habits instilled into it, and will go a long way to making the team better than it was this year. I think Tocchet has gone a good job so far.
I truly believe this roster is on the cusp of being a legitimate threat in the playoffs. Yeah, Benning left the team in a terrible position, but it’s the first time in a long time where I see a clear path forward for the Canucks.

This team is dogshit. I was a massive fan growing up and the pain of watching all the failed “retools” and then how they treated Bruce made me completely jump ship from the sport to football because I can’t just cheer for another NHL franchise.
Recently rejoined the sub and want to let others know the grass can be greener (not Travis). Hopefully the Canucks figure it out but I doubt anything substantial happens with the Aquillini’s at the helm.

We should actually trade Demko. His value is insane on a $5M cap hit and he’s got 3 more years.
Sure, sucks to lose him but we could get a real haul from teams with no goalie. Not sure who we could get but Edmonton and Toronto are in desperate need of a goalie for their immediate window. NJ could use a solidified #1 as well. I doubt Schmid can carry the load of a season plus playoffs. Other teams that could use a real #1: Colorado. Did Georgiev really pan out? LA maybe? Korpisalo maybe needs time to gel but he also needs a new contract iirc.
I don’t know what returns from each of these teams could be, but Demko could really elevate one of those teams to a real contender.
Our window isn’t in the next couple years so by the time it comes, hope that Silovs is ready. God knows if he comes up he’ll get a lot of opportunity to get up to speed and see tons of different looks coming at him.
