Fun Fact: The Florida Panthers used that 4th rounder we sent them in the Reilly Smith trade as part of the package to get Mike Hoffman from San Jose. He’d play 151 games for the Panthers and put up a respectable 129 points in the process, before leaving in free agency.
San Jose also didn’t keep that 4th round pick, they sent it to Montreal in a draft day trade to move up a couple slots. With the pick they got from Montreal, the Sharks selected Jasper Weatherby, who played in 50 NHL games last season and none this season.
Now armed with the original Reilly Smith 4th rounder, the Montreal Canadiens selected Jack Gorniak, a 23 year old center who never signed an ELC with the Habs.
So in total the Reilly Smith to VGK trade resulted in:
VGK: A Stanley Cup.
FLA: 151 games of Mike Hoffman
SJS: Meh prospect
MTL: Dud
