I think you can go down the line and say “wow I’d love to have that guy on my team”

  2. AshCan10

This picture would have been awkward if Vegas won in 2018, who would you put in their place in that case I wonder… Maybe Fleury?

  3. NightHaunted

I’d say it depends. Sometimes you’ve got guys that seem to take the job seriously and believe it’s their job to help develop the players around them and step up as a front man for their organization. Then sometimes you have guys who take it TOO seriously and turn into bullies or just dickheads. That seems pretty rare though, especially in this day and age. Then you’ve got whatever Jamie Benn was doing this year lol.

My favorite version of being the Captain is a dude like McDavid who has the job purely because he’s the greatest hockey player in the world so who’s gonna fucking tell him anything about how he should be doing his job

  4. RomanTrismegistus

It always makes me sad that it was one deflection away from having Toews have 3 in a row

  5. No_Designer_5374

The fact Trouba is my team’s captain seems even more absurd.

  6. CJMcCubbin

Seriously? Questions such as this are infuriating.

How important is air to breathing? FFS.

  7. dudebroguyman09

Should have been Kariya instead of Stevens 💔🦆

  8. Bradlas3

In a lot of cases in addition to being a leader the captain is also usually one of the best players on the team. You can’t really go wrong with any of these guys

  9. Crispy385

Anyone else irrationally bothered by the image using Tampa Bay’s new jersey for the 04 cup? XD

  10. Changeit019

Didn’t Stamkos play 1 shift in the first cup? He scored but that was it due to injuries right?

  11. VanIsleNorm

Not as important as jersey colour apparently.

  12. Snoo_59312

looking at that group of names i would say very important

  13. butt_snorkelr

To play devils advocate, Stone, Landeskog and Stamkos have all missed a considerable amount of time and the team continued to succeed without them. So maybe its not as important as that list of names would lead us to believe.

  14. Crosby crosby toews brown toews brown (omitted) toews crosby

  15. connor8383

Ew ew EW I hate that they used our old home but most recent version of the red jersey for brindamours name. The font and jersey itself just looks off

Steve Yzerman was a winner of several Stanley Cups while Captain, a gold standard for the C Jersey;without doubt.

Scott Stevens ran that team with firm leadership. It was all about putting the work in, every day, even at skates. Scott Gomez talked about looking forward to gamedays, because the games were easier than practice. I think that showed on the Devils cup teams. They were hard working, mechanical, and an absolute cohesive unit.

  18. It’s not like there are horseshit captains all over the NHL. Edmonton’s problem wasn’t McDavid…

Extremely important. Every single captain here (except Dustin Brown) was an absolute monster when it mattered.

They scored the goals that mattered, they caused turnovers, they had a drive that was infectious, etc.

Most specifically Crosby, and Toews. Those guys would see their teams playing poorly and would put the team on their back and show them what it all meant to them. That’s a dynasty captain right there.

Even captains like Stevens, Landeskog, and Ovi who weren’t specifically putting the team on their back, they did a fantastic job at providing energy by laying the body and dropping the gloves. It’s those small things that get your team in the game.

You will actually notice a lot of the time when a captain is doing their job the team rallies behind them and reflect that energy. Notice how when Stone was stealing pucks and scoring goals his team followed right with it. When he was getting scrappy, his team was right in it. When he was keeping his cool, his team was too. That’s a captain, and it takes a good one to win a cup.

Bad captains don’t win cups, how can a team succeed when the one leading the team isn’t keeping order?

This graphic is kinda ass. What caps jersey is that?

  21. magicandfire

Extremely important. Can’t imagine Carolina winning the cup in 06 without Roddy. It’s why we love Jordan Staal so much in Carolina now- he’s a hell of a captain.

  22. forwhathuh

huge. when petro left the blues, the leadership in the defensive end fell off completely. look at us now.

  23. hobbit_lamp

I think it’s pretty important in general but what’s the deal with Kreider saying it’s not that important and it’s really just for the fans?

  24. sk8tergater

I think with the case of the Avalanche it’s pretty clear that not having Landy on the ice this season hurt pretty bad. The leadership he provides to his team is invaluable.

So I’d argue that if you’ve got a good captain like Landy, they are a pretty important piece.

  25. ToXiC_Games

Very. Look at the Avs this year. There was just a void of energy without Landy.

  26. CynicalBite

I’ll go one step further. How important is a CANADIAN captain?

  27. Pretend-Cow2516

I hate how this doesn’t use the era specific Jersey
